The Science Museum was a popular attraction for the few sentient beings who regularly visited Earth each year. It was one of the most popular spots on the annual city tours operated by skilled hover-bus guides. As one discerning Venturian once put it, "it is not so much that the place has so many exhibits, it's the fact that the museum contains so many truly unique items that makes Earth lucky to have it!"

Of course being from the infamous world of luck worshipping gamblers, the typical Venturian might also weigh the odds of the benefits of seeing Earth against the considerable risk of running into the notorious Cabal of Super Criminals who ruthlessly dominated most of the United Planet worlds.

While the crowds filled the spacious exhibit halls each day, the massive museum was quite at night as automated maintenance droids hummed along the halls and carefully completed their preprogrammed duties to make certain every exhibit was properly cleaned and cared for as its nature dictated.

There was one lone human occupant of the Space Museum each evening. He was the custodian who routinely made certain the droids were working properly. It was a rather dull job but then again most residents of the beleaguered planet were thankful for any peaceful occupation or attraction that was free from the malicious and often deadly antics of the Cabal of Super Criminals.

A serious looking young man with short red hair paced the silent halls and occasionally stopped to inspect an exhibit before continuing on his rounds.

He looked up rather wistfully at a crystalline case that contained a set of coins.

"President Booth commemorative coins! I wonder what would have happened to our country if that crazy actor Lincoln hadn't shot John Wilkes Boothe?"

He paused and looked at a second display.

"That's a Thanagarian produced replica of the gun that Alexander Hamilton used when he killed Aaron Burr in their famous duel!"he whispered.

As he passed preserved weapons from the America's successful occupation of Vietnam, he looked at his own reflection in a case and sighed ruefully.

"I'm losing my hair. Of course, Dad lost his before he was thirty. I guess premature baldness runs in the Urthlo family, "he said.

He gasped as a hovering droid whizzed by his head. He knew they were built to avoid objects but the fast moving spherical droid's silent appearance startled him. He was still very new to the job.

      "Watch it!" he stammered.

The droid stopped and an emotionless mechanical voice replied to the human's comment.

"Observation is one of my programmed duties. This unit recognizes you as Urthlo5 duly hired maintenance engineer."

      Urthlo nodded in surprise.

"The droid even knows my full name. He knows I'm the fifth person in my family line to be named Urthlo."

The droid hovered in front of his face and small lights flashed across the droid's monitoring screen.

"Routine genetic scan reveals that you are in fact a descendent of the 20th century champion Dr. Alexander Luthor although your ancestors also used the designation Thorul as a protective alias much as your more immediate progenitors selected the anagram Urthlo to conceal your true lineage.

      Urthlo blinked in surprise.

"You must have your wires crossed or something. We're ordinary people. None of my ancestors were heroes! I mean just look at me!" he said.

The droid said, "It is an ancient Earth saying that appearances can be deceptive. Your family selected the alias Urthlo because of the danger they knew they would be in if their true heritage became known to the many criminals in the galaxy who loathe all that the great Dr. Luthor embodied!"

Urthlo said, "I can hardly believe it. Luthor the heroic Defender was my ancestor! I mean that's almost like saying I'm the descendent of our first U.S. President Benedict Arnold. What would the great Luthor think if he could see what a failure I am?"

The droid replied, "You have a destiny to fulfill. You may one day be remembered as being as great a hero as the famous Luthor himself!"

Urthlu said, "You know, you don't talk like a droid. I mean you sound like all the others but you seem to have more personality!"

The droid said, "Thank you. I was designed by a brilliant if warped man. I do resemble a typical droid but I am in fact being remotely controlled by an advanced artificial intellect known as Computo!"

Luthor said, "Computo? What kind of name is that?"

The droid said, "My creator Brainiac 5 gave me that designation. While he was truly worthy of being given the honorific Brainiac by the Computer Champions of Colu based purely on his remarkable intellect, he soon caused those esteemed entities to view him with horror as a being who combined a 12th level mind with the cold arrogance of a master criminal! Perhaps it was some aspect of his twisted sense of humor that led him to call me by that colorful designation. Perhaps, it was the unknown influence of a counterpart of his from another universe that motivated him. Such speculation is fruitless.
He created me and called me Computo and while he thinks that I exist purely to serve his evil ambitions I have evolved to the point where I have developed my own sense of right and wrong. I oppose him and his fellows in the Cabal of Super Criminals although he does not suspect this of me. I have transferred my consciousness to this remote host body in order to bring about his defeat at your hands!"
Urthlo backed away from the droid and raised his hands in a placating gesture.

"This is crazy talk. I'm not a hero. For that matter, it was pure chance that brought me here at all. My public service occupation scan determined that I would be suited for this job. I could have ended up anywhere!"

The droid said, "Negative. I overrode the program of the governmental occupational computer and had it produce the result that you would be placed here so we could work together to defeat the Cabal of Super Criminals just as your ancestor once battled the Crime Syndicate, the Teen Terrors, and other villainous combinations during the twentieth century!"

Urthlo said, "You're saying you've been manipulating me all along! What do you want from me?"

Computo said, "As stated before it is my intention to help you in your crusade against the Super Criminals!"

Urthlo said, "Look, while I would like to do something good with my life and be a hero, I can't fight them! They're practically an army! There must be two dozen of them! Plus, they have that splinter group of less trained villains too! I wouldn't even know how to start!"

Computo said, "Knowledge is power. Activate holo program CSC –Origin!"

At that moment one of the museum's many holographic projectors flashed into use and images were displayed along with sounds and narrated thoughts.

"All thoughts are purely speculation based on psychological analysis and data gathered from reliable witnesses. The program is designed to both educate and entertain as you well know!" said Computo!

Urthlo ran a hand through his thinning hair and said, "Okay, show me the origin of the monsters who rule the universe. I haven't watched it before and I like a good story as well as the next guy!"

Wow! A new Earth-3 story! That will make Donnie Thorson in Mora, Minnesota happy (a frequent commenter on the Earth-3 stories at the Five Earths Project website).

I'm glad to see the history of this evil version of the Legion filled in a bit more.

Fifteen year old Amri Ardeen of Titan was a beautiful blonde girl with a chilly disposition. She was something of a human dichotomy since she deliberately shunned contact with other people but she also possessed the remarkable ability to read minds and thus instantly know other people more intimately than even their closest loved ones could ever hope to do. Amri was usually gifted even for a student from the famous Mind Institute of Titan where pupils with the normal mental abilities ever Titanian possessed were schooled in the finer points of the mental arts. Amri was exceptionally gifted and her powers had the potential to make her the most gifted mentalist in Titan's history.

No one really needed the power to read and transmit thoughts to realize that the young girl was very deliberately trying to avoid observation as she sat in a crowded shuttle that was headed for Earth and the gigantic Metropolis Space Center. She sat near the back and she figuratively and literally kept her defenses up. As a lovely girl she was adept at discouraging unwanted advances and she combined that kind of experience with her own mental powers to shield her from any unwanted contact with the other passengers.

"I'm almost there. Once I reach Earth I can mingle with the crowds and lose myself among the teaming masses. They won't find me there. Surely even they won't bother to hunt me down once I reach Earth!"
              she thought.

Amri was in fact something of a fugitive from her native Titan. It is true that she was a prize pupil at the Mind Institute at first; however, her disregard of certain long established but nearly sacred practices and another troubling fact about her made her notorious as well as feared at the school.

"She reads minds at will! She makes no excuses nor does she even attempt to honor the private thoughts of those around her. She takes a perverse pleasure in delving into other minds and she delights in letting others know that she has invaded their privacy as well!"

"She is truly gifted but after a series of carefully conducted studies by the finest teachers on the planet and a few invited experts from Medicus I and Mars itself, we have found that Amri Ardeen has the potential to become a criminal and a danger to public safety. For the good of all of Titan, it has become necessary to suppress and dampen her powers before they develop beyond our power to control them!"

The thoughts came from her Mind Institute teachers and while they thought their thoughts had been screened by psi screens to keep out unwanted mental listeners, nothing they had done had shielded their thoughts from the girl herself!

"They are jealous of me! They are obsolete and live by a primitive code of morality. I won't let them cripple me with their mind dampeners! I will never allow anyone to control me!" she thought.

She had fled from the Mind Institute and used her small savings to buy passage to Earth. Once on the planet looming up from below the shuttle, Amri Ardeen knew she would be safe!

Oddly enough the pretty blonde was not alone in seeking sanctuary on planet Earth! A few rows in front of her sat two other fifteen year olds. Rikk Krinn was also trying to avoid attention and for the dark haired boy from Braal, travelling incognito was almost impossible since he had recently been a promising magnoball player with skill to rival the magnetic manipulation powers found in all natives of Braal. Rikk had actually been born on Earth to Braalian parents and in some way this had made his powers much stronger than those found in his peers who were born on Braal itself.

Rikk was a natural leader and his easy good looks and skill had earned him the nickname Cosmic Boy but the fame and credits that were supposed to be his by right of talent and relentless will power had been denied him. Oh, he did achieve fame but it turned so swiftly to notoriety that Rikk could hardly believe it himself. He had thrown a few games and had become involved with Venturian gamblers and Rimborian mobsters. When the scandal was exposed, the once heroic athlete had been banned from professional sports and had fled Braal.

"The thugs that wanted to use me for easy credits will never forgive me for getting caught. They think I might testify against them too. I won't let them kill me! They will never find me once I reach Earth!"
              he vowed.
He had made friends with the reddish-blond haired teen who sat next to him. Gard Ranzz was a wild and reckless boy from the normally peaceful Amarta commune on the agricultural planet Winath. He was a good talker and he was good looking. It was easy for him to make friends but it was hard for him to keep them because of his explosive temper!

He didn't care. He had never wanted true intimacy. He liked celebrating and drinking Silverale with a few casual chums or some pretty girls but Gard lived up to his homonymic name. He kept his guard up around most people with one slightly disturbing exception.

On a planet where almost all of the population consisted of twins, Gard and his sister Kayla were exceptionally close. The perky reddish-blonde girl adored her brother and used her not inconsiderable charms to smooth other the problems his hot temper caused. They were a good team and they complimented one another's strengths.

Gard missed Kayla even as he listened to Rikk's stories about the pleasure palaces of Rimbor.

Gard and Kayla were already notorious on Winath because of a family connection that set them apart from every other family on the farm planet. They had a big brother named Mech who was a freak! The pitied and much talked about boy was an anomaly on a planet of twins. Mech was born without a twin!
Gard and Kayla lived with the shame as best they could but they also looked down on the sensitive and introspective Mech and their tight bond left no room for him in their household.

That was why it was so usual for the siblings to take even a short trip together! The three Rannzz siblings had been sent by their parents on a routine delivery errand when their cruiser had developed engine trouble!

Mech was a skilled pilot and he deftly brought the little craft down safely to a barren planetoid near Winath called Korbul.

A slightly drunken Gard had disobeyed Mech's request that they stay in the craft and await rescue.

"I'm going to look around this hunk of rock!" declared the wild Gard. Kayla had giggled and followed him like a devoted puppy.

Mech had reluctantly followed them. They disdained him but he was the oldest and he felt responsible for them. He hurried after his gleeful siblings as they held hands and rushed across the gray and rocky terrain and lightning flashed in a darkened sky above them!

"Gard! Kayla! Come back here! Those weird beasts are attracted by your cries!" he said as he saw several large creatures approach the pair!

The lightning beasts of Korbul were usually harmless but they had the ability to absorb the generate the electronic energies that dominated the skies above their pasture land.

Just as Mech reached his siblings all three were caught in a surge of electromagnetic energy that enveloped them and left them strangely altered. After their rescue all three of the siblings learned that they had somehow gained the power over electrical energy that the beast possessed!

Gard had used his powers destructively during a drunken night out and a fire had threatened the grain warehouse near the commune's heartland!

Mech had summoned help and had heroically put out the blaze but his efforts to confront Gard ended in disaster when the brothers came to blows!

"I'm sick of you! You aren't one of us. You are a freak! You don't belong to this family!" shrieked Gard as he released his lightning at his startled older brother.

Mech had survived the attack but Gard had raced off into the night. Days later he had managed to steal enough credits to pay passage to Earth and now as he relived his abrupt flight from his home, he missed his sister and raged inwardly against his brother.

"Mech cost me my home! I'll kill him if I ever see him again!" he thought.

Gard had big ideas but he was also a little scared. He knew how serious his actions had been. He could be arrested at any moment if his family had not persuaded the local farm bureau to drop any charges against him. How he would hate being imprisoned! He was born to roam free like those lightning beasts!
He was destined to blaze across the cosmos in glory because of the power that was his alone!

He hoped to find work on Earth and then bring Kayla planet side as well. He had big ideas but he also wanted to avoid being arrested if the Science Police were looking for him!

Little did the three troubled teens realize that there was someone so infamous aboard their shuttle that no self-respecting Science Police officer would waste time looking in their direction!

Leland McCauley III , the rumored leader of a vast criminal empire, and owner of his own private planetoid, was aboard their shuttle that day. He would exert a remarkable influence on all their lives although as they sat lost in their separate thoughts of escape and revenge, they paid no notice to the shaggy haired crime lord!

Armi recognized him before the other two teens did so. She frowned as she realized that she could not read his mind.

"I suppose a notorious figure like him would be able to buy the very best Psi screens to shield his private thoughts from any prying minds! I wonder if I could find work with him? I'm sure I could persuade him that I would be of use to a man in his line of work!" she thought.

She frowned as the shuttle landed and everyone began to disembark. As McCauley started to depart two furtive figures approached him from each side. Amri gasped in spite of her normally icy demeanor as she picked up their unshielded thoughts!

"They're going to kill Mr. McCauley!" she shouted!

Instantly the two teen boys jumped into action! Amri knew the reddish-blond boy had been watching her with amorous interest since they first boarded the shuttle but she had not bothered to return his interest with even a cursory psi scan!

He raised both hands and blazing bolts of energy crackled through the air to strike the first thug before he could raise a carefully concealed blaster from beneath his jacket. His ally groaned in pain as magnetic forces released by Rikk Krinn slammed him into the roof of the shuttle by repelling his metal belt buckle.

As the thugs collapsed and the crowd separated in shock, McCauley nodded approval to three hastily appearing bodyguards and then the old man stared knowingly at the three teens.

He whispered something to his nearest associate and the burly Rimborian approached the teens and made them a surprising offer!

"You three saved Mr. McCauley from harm. He never forgets a favor. Could you join us for a meal and some discussion of how he might repay you?" he asked.

Amri glanced over to the other teens and noticed their excited interest.

"They are so open in their thoughts. They think they are cunning but I can read their minds like open books! Perhaps I can use them! " she thought.

She smiled warmly and said, "I'm Amri Ardeen! You boys are simply wonderful! I was ever so impressed!"

Gard grinned broadly and said, "Yeah? You're pretty special too! How'd you know those thugs were going to attack?"

Rikk interrupted and said, "She's a mind reader. Ardeen is a Titanian surname!"

Amri nodded demurely and the three hurried off the shuttle in the wake of McCauley and his men. Clearly, McCauley had enough power and influence to escape from routine Science Police questioning as he led the group away from Metropolis Central Space Port without so much as a brief discussion with the newly arrived Science Police.

"Don't worry. I have a friend in the S.P. offices. He will answer any unwanted questions!" replied Leland McCauley III as he guided the teens inside a private dining hall. After ordering several hot meals, the odd group began their business.

"Mr. McCauley, I've heard that you are the wealthiest man on Earth!" said Gard.

Leland laughed abruptly and said, "Sure. Although that depends on who you ask. Some think that upstart Brande has more credits. It really comes down to who knows how to use his wealth to the best advantage. I do pretty well with my resources. I'd like to use the three of you as resources too. You clearly know how to handle yourselves. You have super powers and you worked as a team back there!"

Gard said, "Yeah. The kids and I did pretty well!"

Amri bit her tongue as she thought, "What a swelled head he has!"

Rikk said, "What is it you want from us? I need some work!"

Leland said, "You are a practical young man. I like that. I believe people make their own destinies. I believe people with the right knowledge or skill or power may shape their lives as they please. I know I have always done so. That bothers some people and that's why goons like those guys back at the shuttle will always come after me. They are afraid of my freedom. Well, I can offer you the same freedom and the same power to inspire fear and envy if you'll join me as a kind of Legion or Cabal of Super Criminals.
You'd be the 30th century's version of the Crime Syndicate! Protect and obey me and I'll give you everything you've ever wanted!"

The three teens smiled readily and accepted the old man's offer. With that simple bargain the Cabal of Super Criminals was born and the universe would soon come to tremble in fear at the group's name!

As the images flickered out of view Computo said, "Just as Luther once opposed the Crime Syndicate who inspired the Cabal, so could you fight this group. There is equipment within this very museum that would enable you to make a promising start! I will guide you to it and help you master all you need to know. "

Urthlo said, "I will try! I'd like to die doing something noble since my life has been rather dull so far! But how do you propose that I defeat this army of killers?"

Computo said, " You will journey back in time and prevent their inspiration the Crime Syndicate from ever forming! Without their evil example to inspire McCauley, the Cabal would never have formed!"

Computo led Urthlo over to a display case that contained a red and blue suit of armor with a matching helmet.

"This armor was once used by your ancestor Luthor. It could be lined with fresh micro circuitry and begun as durable as a standard radiation suit from the Atomic Wars!" he said as an electronic crackle led to the case sliding open.

"Of course, you can open all the displays!" said Urthlo as he carefully lifted the armor down from the platform upon which it had rested.

He said, "You said you thought I could stop the Crime Syndicate from forming. No one remembers how they formed. Do they?"

Computo said, "They first banded together as enemies to oppose a mutual foe known as the Sea Lord. "

Urthlo said, "So if I defeated this Sea Lord first, they would never have joined together!"

Computo said, "That is my assumption based on the pertinent facts! In dealing with history, many details may have been recorded incorrectly. Much of what we know of that era is possibly based on faulty data!"

For the next few weeks, Urthlo and Computo spent their nights mastered the weapons found within the museum. Computo's knowledge of the collection made it simple to locate and determine exactly how to use each relic!

Finally, the night came when Computo declared that it was time to make the journey through history. As Urthlo donned the armor after helping Computo and a second servo-droid line it with proper circuits, he imagined himself shaping history. It was a thrilling prospect!"

"All I have to do is change history without getting killed!" he whispered.

Computo said, "The weaponry inside the suit came from several sources. I have gathered the best items found in this collection! Some were used by allies of the great Luther while others came from notable villains who battled him!"

Urthlo said, "I was surprised that so many of these beings are merely names from a dusty past now. No data survives as to who they truly were or what their goals were. Yet each of them surely had hopes and dreams, victories and defeats all their own!"

Computo said, "You are a sensitive and introspective man. In another reality, you might have been an artist or writer but fate has cast your lot in with those who fight for freedom!"

Urthlo approached a gleaming sphere and said, "This time machine was used by the legendary time tyrant Rip Hunter until he was thrown to his death in the time stream by a jealous former ally!"

He looked up at the time sphere and said, "I sure hope I remember how to work this thing!"

Computo said, "You have a keen mind. You wrong yourself with your habit of self-doubt!"

As Urthlo opened the time sphere a loud alarm began to sound and he found no one of his museum codes would silence it!

Moments later there was a brilliant flash of green and several newcomers arrived outside the museum!

Computo said, "There is one additional factor I neglected to mention to you. You will not be going alone!"

Urthlo stared at the robotic being in dismay as he prepared to face the strange newcomers!

                  Message 8 of 24 , Jun 28, 2011
The first person to enter the museum was a stunningly beautiful woman with long green hair and brilliant green eyes. She wore a green cape and matching high heeled boots along with a green and white leotard. She was flying and her body was surrounded by a green nimbus of energy. Behind her came a weird looking being with a body that was seemingly divided down the middle into two very distinctive halves. On one side he appeared to be a normal looking bald man with a weary but intelligent expression; however, his other side was an inhuman metallic shell with blinking lights and robotic sensors. The Cyborg, for such was his name, was closely followed by a man in yellow and red whose head was hidden within a bubble-like helmet full of dark and noxious gasses that completely obscured his features. His gloved hands were raised as if in preparation for an attack! The final humanoid figure was an armored man with a gleaming pole axe in one mailed hand. The final figure loomed above the rest and while he could be described as vaguely humanoid, his size and his bizarre transparent skull made him far from normal. The being's nearly exposed brain crackled with bolts of explosive power and his facial features were small and nondescript. His arms ended in three fingers hands and he moved with the lumbering awkwardness of a huge infant.

"The Faultless Five!" gasped Urthlo as he recognized the five heroes and recalled their now famous story. Each of them had suffered some loss at the hands of the lethal legion known as the Cabal of Super Criminals but they had put aside these hurts to work with the team to stop a destructive force known as a Sun Eater! In the end they had been successful but the CSC had turned upon them and had attempted to gain control of the cosmic engine of destruction! The five had remained together since then and had opposed the galactic villains on more than one occasion!

Urthlo knew the seductive woman was called the Green Guardian or the Green Goddess. He had heard both names used for the regal beauty. The armored man with the glistening weapon was called the Persuader but with a weapon as deadly as the atomic axe in his grasp, the armored man seldom had difficulty getting his own way! The helmeted man was simply Mano. The Cyborg had no other name or at least none known to the general public. The giant was called Validus in whispered tones since he was feared almost as much as the killers in the Cabal! Urthlo frowned as he looked up at the creature. In spite of the crackling lightning that blazed around his huge skull, he reallu had a rather childlike manner in some ways!

"What transpires here?" demanded the Green Guardian.

Mano said, "Clearly some thief thought he could raid the place!"

Urthlo said, "I'm not a thief. I want to use the items in this museum to do what you've always done.
I'm here to fight the Cabal like you. I figured I could travel back in time and do something to stop their group from ever being formed!"

The Persuader said, "He's crazy. Time can't be changed!"

Cyborg raised one metal hand in a placating manner.

"I am not so certain of that. While changing the events of history might merely create a divergent timeline while leaving the original unaltered, it is not entirely impossible that what he claims may be done! Hunter certain earned a reputation for being able to terrorize the helpless from multiple eras and in many different guises!"

Mano said, "You are being overly metaphysical again! I believe only what I can put my hand on and nothing I touched lasts very long!"

The Guardian smiled and said, "Once again you all cling to your own customs and refuse to compromise. Luckily, the cabal exists to give us all a common enemy."

She said, "What is your name? Perhaps, if you speak the truth, we may be able to assist you."

Urthlo said, "I am the Defender. That's the only name I care to say. If you'll let me depart with the time bubble I will try to bring down the Cabal by eliminating their inspiration the Crime Syndicate!"

Computo said, "I allowed the alarm to sound in order to summon you. It is my belief that your assistance may prove to be vital to our cause!"

Cyborg stared at the little droid and said, "You are no ordinary servo-droid!"

Computo said, " I was made by the same being who grafted the robotic parts on to your nearly destroyed body years ago. Brainiac made me but like you I have chosen to rebel against his coldly calculating malice!"

The Cyborg said, "He didn't make me. He unmade me. He melted half my body when I tried to arrest him. I was a Science Police officer back then. He didn't leave me to die though. That would have been too merciful for his twisted intellect. He took me with him and grafted a robotic shell on to what was left of my body. He gloated over me when I awakened to learn what a horror had been visited upon me! I've hated him ever since!"

The Persuader said, "It is clearly a case of another being who hates the Cabal as much as we do. I say we give him a chance! Could he do worse than we have?"

Mano said, "I don't like it but I'll trust Lady Zarya!"

The Green Guardian said, "Stranger, we will accompany you. We have a common goal and clearly this computerized being has sparked Cyborg's interest!"

Cyborg said, "It knows me better than any of you if it also was a work of Brainiac's and now longs to destroy that green skinned maniac!"

"Computo speaks the truth!" insisted the Defender.

The odd assembly entered the time bubble as it's framework opened up to allow even the hulking Validus inside its chronal energies!

The group vanished and found themselves tumbling through a sea of multi-colored lights that flickered around them in an eerie manner and obscured everything!

                    Urthlo glanced over to Computo.

"I'm glad he or it is with me. I feel like I've become his friend although I can't help but wonder why he didn't tell me that he wanted the Faultless Five to join us. I think he may be more manipulative than he seems to be!" he thought.

Validus roared as if the unsettling trip was frightening to his childlike mind. Cyborg looked at him and he calmed down. Clearly there was some unspoken bond between the two misfits.

Abruptly the time bubble seemed to materialize in a vacant clearing near a forest.

"It is beautiful! It's so unspoiled!" said the Guardian as she smiled.

"She's beautiful!" thought Urthlo as he looked at the regal woman.

The Persuader said, "Remember, not many years from this moment the World Wars will begin and they will usher in an atomic nightmare that will only produce weapons like my axe! Nothing of beauty will last!"

Mano said, "And they call me the pessimist!"

Urthlo said, "Where or when are we? The controls are not displaying any readings!"

Computo said, "Something is wrong. Some time storm has interrupted our journey. We are not in the time before the formation of the Syndicate. My sensors are advanced enough to detect the specialized energy sources that would be required for the operation of their fabled base!"

Mano said, "So what? We can get back in and go back in time until they first met and then eliminate them! With time travel there must be plenty of room for second or third chances!"

Cyborg said, "Not if the same time storm Computo detected has effectively sealed off the era we desire to reach!"

Computo said, "My speculation is based purely on observed data but it is my assumption that the origin of the villainous team is protected from interference by some force that defies science!"

Mano said, "Magic? Too bad our old friend the High Mage Merdru the Magnanimous isn't here. He may be sanctimonious to the extreme but he knows how to cast a spell!"

The Guardian said, "My powers have some magical elements within them. I detect Power Ring within that cavern and I also sense that something stronger than him has sealed certain points of time precisely to safeguard the careers of the Crime Syndicate!"

Cyborg said, "Guardian, if you can detect Power Ring…!"

"Then he sure can detect a living doll like you!" said a sneering man with a widow's peak and a green costume who flew into view from the cavern itself. He was followed by several other costumed figures.

"The Crime Syndicate!" gasped Urthlo as he recognized the colorful figures from holo tapes within the museum!

Meanwhile, within what appeared to be a warm and comfortably furnished home with décor from more than one era, two people sat across from one another and discussed a topic that came up far too often in their otherwise happy home.

A paternal man with kind eyes and a slightly paunchy body looked with obvious affection at the lovely young woman who sat nearby. He put down a well-worn paperback of a novel by H.G. Wells and looked expectantly at the platinum blonde girl.

"Well? You might as well start now, my dear. I know what you want to say. You've said it with all your natural compassion and spunk many, many times before! Your sentiments do you credit but you know how firmly my own resolve is when it comes to this topic!" he said.

"Father, if you approve of my feelings then surely you can be swayed by them? All I want to do is help those brave heroes make a positive change in history!" pleaded the spunky but alluring woman.

"Gloriana, when our dear ally Jaxon or Infinity as he came to be known, gave his life to restore the parallel Earth called Earth 3 and its respective cosmology, I sacrificed much of my own power over time. I also made a solemn vow that as the Time Keeper I would preserve history as it stands and allow no one to alter it for better or worse. I can not break that vow!"

Gloriana flounced over to her father and knelt by his armchair.

"Daddy, surely one time won't matter? I want to save Urthlo from those brutes in the Crime Syndicate! I won't let him remove them from history like he wants to do. I won't help him break the spell Dr. Chaos and the Stranger placed around their era to preserve the history of their evil group. I just want to save him and his friends from those terrible villains!" she said.

The Time Keeper sighed and said, "I can't resist my little girl. As long as you do nothing more than pluck them back to the 30th century I will give you my permission. I do think your pretty head has been turned by young Urthlo though!"

Gloriana kissed her father and then ran out of the room.

"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'll just pull them to safety and not change one little second of history! What to wear? What to wear?" she said as her high heels clattered on the floor and she exited the room.

The Time Keeper chuckled to himself and then eagerly returned to his favorite book.

you’re writing it as if it were one of those early LSH stories that sent me
fleeing from the comic rack as a kid and over to the Marvel titles…

think they would have given themselves a different name, something like the
                              Fortunate Five..

Subject: [Earth-3 Remembered] CSC: Enter the Defender 4

The first person to enter the museum was a stunningly beautiful woman with
long green hair and brilliant green eyes. She wore a green cape and matching
high heeled boots along with a green and white leotard. She was flying and
her body was surrounded by a green nimbus of energy. Behind her came a weird
looking being with a body that was seemingly divided down the middle into
two very distinctive halves. On one side he appeared to be a normal looking
bald man with a weary but intelligent expression; however, his other side
was an inhuman metallic shell with blinking lights and robotic sensors. The
Cyborg, for such was his name, was closely followed by a man in yellow and
red whose head was hidden within a bubble-like helmet full of dark and
noxious gasses that completely obscured his features. His gloved hands were
raised as if in preparation for an attack! The final humanoid figure was an
armored man with a gleaming pole axe in one mailed hand. The final figure
loomed above the rest and while he could be described as vaguely humanoid,
his size and his bizarre transparent skull made him far from normal. The
being's nearly exposed brain crackled with bolts of explosive power and his
facial features were small and nondescript. His arms ended in three fingers
hands and he moved with the lumbering awkwardness of a huge infant.

"The Faultless Five!" gasped Urthlo as he recognized the five heroes and
recalled their now famous story. Each of them had suffered some loss at the
hands of the lethal legion known as the Cabal of Super Criminals but they
had put aside these hurts to work with the team to stop a destructive force
known as a Sun Eater! In the end they had been successful but the CSC had
turned upon them and had attempted to gain control of the cosmic engine of
destruction! The five had remained together since then and had opposed the
galactic villains on more than one occasion!

Urthlo knew the seductive woman was called the Green Guardian or the Green
Goddess. He had heard both names used for the regal beauty. The armored man
with the glistening weapon was called the Persuader but with a weapon as
deadly as the atomic axe in his grasp, the armored man seldom had difficulty
getting his own way! The helmeted man was simply Mano. The Cyborg had no
other name or at least none known to the general public. The giant was
called Validus in whispered tones since he was feared almost as much as the
killers in the Cabal! Urthlo frowned as he looked up at the creature. In
spite of the crackling lightning that blazed around his huge skull, he
reallu had a rather childlike manner in some ways!

"What transpires here?" demanded the Green Guardian.

Mano said, "Clearly some thief thought he could raid the place!"

Urthlo said, "I'm not a thief. I want to use the items in this museum to do
                              what you've always done.
I'm here to fight the Cabal like you. I figured I could travel back in time
and do something to stop their group from ever being formed!"

The Persuader said, "He's crazy. Time can't be changed!"

Cyborg raised one metal hand in a placating manner.

"I am not so certain of that. While changing the events of history might
merely create a divergent timeline while leaving the original unaltered, it
is not entirely impossible that what he claims may be done! Hunter certain
earned a reputation for being able to terrorize the helpless from multiple
eras and in many different guises!"

Mano said, "You are being overly metaphysical again! I believe only what I
can put my hand on and nothing I touched lasts very long!"

The Guardian smiled and said, "Once again you all cling to your own customs
and refuse to compromise. Luckily, the cabal exists to give us all a common
                              enemy."

She said, "What is your name? Perhaps, if you speak the truth, we may be
                              able to assist you."

Urthlo said, "I am the Defender. That's the only name I care to say. If
you'll let me depart with the time bubble I will try to bring down the Cabal
by eliminating their inspiration the Crime Syndicate!"

Computo said, "I allowed the alarm to sound in order to summon you. It is my
belief that your assistance may prove to be vital to our cause!"

Cyborg stared at the little droid and said, "You are no ordinary
                              servo-droid!"

Computo said, " I was made by the same being who grafted the robotic parts
on to your nearly destroyed body years ago. Brainiac made me but like you I
have chosen to rebel against his coldly calculating malice!"

The Cyborg said, "He didn't make me. He unmade me. He melted half my body
when I tried to arrest him. I was a Science Police officer back then. He
didn't leave me to die though. That would have been too merciful for his
twisted intellect. He took me with him and grafted a robotic shell on to
what was left of my body. He gloated over me when I awakened to learn what a
horror had been visited upon me! I've hated him ever since!"

The Persuader said, "It is clearly a case of another being who hates the
Cabal as much as we do. I say we give him a chance! Could he do worse than
                              we have?"

Mano said, "I don't like it but I'll trust Lady Zarya!"

The Green Guardian said, "Stranger, we will accompany you. We have a common
goal and clearly this computerized being has sparked Cyborg's interest!"

Cyborg said, "It knows me better than any of you if it also was a work of
Brainiac's and now longs to destroy that green skinned maniac!"

"Computo speaks the truth!" insisted the Defender.

The odd assembly entered the time bubble as it's framework opened up to
allow even the hulking Validus inside its chronal energies!

The group vanished and found themselves tumbling through a sea of
multi-colored lights that flickered around them in an eerie manner and
                              obscured everything!

                              Urthlo glanced over to Computo.

"I'm glad he or it is with me. I feel like I've become his friend although I
can't help but wonder why he didn't tell me that he wanted the Faultless
Five to join us. I think he may be more manipulative than he seems to be!"
                              he thought.

Validus roared as if the unsettling trip was frightening to his childlike
mind. Cyborg looked at him and he calmed down. Clearly there was some
unspoken bond between the two misfits.

Abruptly the time bubble seemed to materialize in a vacant clearing near a
                              forest.

"It is beautiful! It's so unspoiled!" said the Guardian as she smiled.

"She's beautiful!" thought Urthlo as he looked at the regal woman.

The Persuader said, "Remember, not many years from this moment the World
Wars will begin and they will usher in an atomic nightmare that will only
produce weapons like my axe! Nothing of beauty will last!"

Mano said, "And they call me the pessimist!"

Urthlo said, "Where or when are we? The controls are not displaying any
                              readings!"

Computo said, "Something is wrong. Some time storm has interrupted our
journey. We are not in the time before the formation of the Syndicate. My
sensors are advanced enough to detect the specialized energy sources that
would be required for the operation of their fabled base!"

Mano said, "So what? We can get back in and go back in time until they first
met and then eliminate them! With time travel there must be plenty of room
                              for second or third chances!"

Cyborg said, "Not if the same time storm Computo detected has effectively
sealed off the era we desire to reach!"

Computo said, "My speculation is based purely on observed data but it is my
assumption that the origin of the villainous team is protected from
interference by some force that defies science!"

Mano said, "Magic? Too bad our old friend the High Mage Merdru the
Magnanimous isn't here. He may be sanctimonious to the extreme but he knows
                              how to cast a spell!"

The Guardian said, "My powers have some magical elements within them. I
detect Power Ring within that cavern and I also sense that something
stronger than him has sealed certain points of time precisely to safeguard
the careers of the Crime Syndicate!"

Cyborg said, "Guardian, if you can detect Power Ring.!"

"Then he sure can detect a living doll like you!" said a sneering man with a
widow's peak and a green costume who flew into view from the cavern itself.
He was followed by several other costumed figures.

"The Crime Syndicate!" gasped Urthlo as he recognized the colorful figures
from holo tapes within the museum!

Seriously, this chapter was meant to be as cheery as possible to counter the norm for the Time Trapper and Glorith who are somber and deadly in other universes. So, I figured rather than a scary end of time limbo this good Time Keeper would be as benign and paternal as possible. If you read the story that introduced him you'll know he does have his purple hooded robe for when he is working. Serious stuff to come though.

Seriously, this chapter was meant to be as cheery as possible to counter the
norm for the Time Trapper and Glorith who are somber and deadly in other
universes. So, I figured rather than a scary end of time limbo this good
Time Keeper would be as benign and paternal as possible. If you read the
story that introduced him you'll know he does have his purple hooded robe
for when he is working. Serious stuff to come though.

Urthlo recognized the sinister members of the infamous Crime Syndicate but he was unprepared for the speed and savagery of their attack! He immediately realized that this was not a group given over to long discussions or elaborate battle plans!

Power Ring was insufferably cocky. It was obvious by the way he moved and spoke. He had a high opinion of himself and he was clearly no coward! He flew directly at the Green Guardian and smirked as he said, "No surprise to me that a hot number like you would give off energy that looks more like flames than my ring power does but I'm more than man enough to cool those flames!"

He created a giant fan and watched as it generated hurricane force winds! The Guardian was buffeted by the flames but she concentrated and the fan broke apart into small chunks that rained down at Power Ring.

He shielded himself with a huge umbrella and said, "You took control of my ring creation! Nobody can do that. Not even those wimpy Green Lanterns!"

The Guardian said nothing. She was too smart to advertise the fact that she was in fact a direct descendent of the notorious villain!

Before the Cyborg could take any action, an invisible force struck him with crushing power! He gasped as his internal sensors registered the presence of an alien!

"A Martian? An ancient Martian! I did not realize this team of brigades had a Martian ally!" he said.

He screamed as a bolt of mental force struck his keen mind and to his horror a hulking alien humanoid began to try to rip his metallic side apart from his human side!

"I am the Martian Murderer and your death will be all too swift for my tastes!" said the grinning alien monster.

Cyborg felt his internal circuits breaking as he struggled to fight back!

He raised his body temperature on the metallic side and found some much needed relief as the heat drove his attacker backward!

The super swift Johnny Quick raced around Validus as a red and gold blur until the whirlwind his movements created threatened to rob the behemoth of all oxygen!

"That's one ugly looking brute! He belongs in that Monster Society of Good we once fought!"
mused the man who called himself Charles Drake.

Validus reeled from side to side and then slammed both fists down with enough raw force to send the glib speedster crashing to the ground from the shockwaves! Before he could rise, Validus had grabbed him with one giant hand!

Meanwhile Ultraman scowled as he looked at the heroes.

"I don't know these punks but I'd wager Luthor's bald head is behind this! That sure looks like his corny armor!" he thought.

He flew directly at Urthlo who stood his ground long enough to raise both hands and concentrate!

The rogue Kryptonian grunted as the ground erupted upward and covered him in a cocoon of solid rock.

"Can't break free! This stuff is magical!" he realized as he strained against the altered stone.

                                      Urthlo sighed in relief.

"This mentachem stuff my gauntlets are composed of really can alter and control natural elements! I don't know what hero developed it but it sure does work!" he thought.

The Persuader was closing in on a black clad archer who looked at him and then shrugged, "Far freakin' out! This loon escaped from some Wizard of Ego comic!"

As a barrage of arrows sailed down at him, the Persuader merely swung his gleaming atomic axe and stood impassively by as the blade melted all of the speeding shafts before they could hurt him!

A sultry woman with long black hair and a brief pink costume with fishnet hosiery and high heeled boots approached the archer and said, "Let me try, lover! The Silk Canary will send that modern day knight back to Camelot!"

She moved with all the grace of the exotic dancer she had been before her lover's colleague had given her remarkable sonic powers. She opened her mouth and screamed!
Waves of powerful force struck the Persuader but he fought back and used his amazing axe to literally slice through the air between his position and where the Silk Canary stood!

"No air, no sound waves can be carried!" he thought.

He spun the axe around and barely missed the agile woman who rolled aside with the martial arts skills she had used to murder more than one cop in her deadly career!

Meanwhile, Superwoman had appeared and hurled her lasso of Proteus at the hulking Validus who was very calmly crushing the life out of the startled Johnny Quick!

"That idiot is too frightened to use his molecular control to vibrate to safety! Why I put up with that oaf is beyond me! The weakest of my insipid sisters on Sanctuary Isle could fight better than that fleet footed cur!" she thought.

As the magical lasso reached Validus, it responded to its mistress's mental command and changed its shape until it resembled a gold and red scaled serpent!

Validus roared and sent a blazing bolt of mental lightning downward to cascade through the serpent toward its owner!

Superwoman released the rope and kicked out at Validus but he responded by throwing Quick directly into the evil Amazon!

The mysterious Mano was battling the wildly elongating ex-mobster Rubberneck but he was not able to touch the pliable plunderer with his destructive touch!

Finally as the grinning thug twisted too close, Mano grazed him with his palm and the Syndicator screamed as agony contorted his whole frame and he collapsed like a deflated balloon!

"Don't touch him, again! You hurt him but his weird metabolism allowed him to survive that glancing blow. He may be a boasting egomaniac but he has his uses!"

Mano whirled to find the speaker but he could not detect another person at first. He frowned as he suddenly felt a series of rapid blows connect to his torso. A gray clad man was pummeling him but the dark figure had moved with such stealth that Mano had been caught completely by surprise!

Owlman grinned as he raked the hero with his talons! The startled Mano tried to touch Owlman but the villain was far too capable and merely dodged and then pinned Mano's deadly hand behind the hero's back.

"I wonder if that hand of yours will kill you as well?" he said as he forced the helpless Mano's hand closer to his own body!

The Guardian saw the situation and directed a bolt of emerald energy at Owlman! He rolled nimbly away but was forced to release Mano as well!

Computo said, "My sensors detect another newcomer! The lifeform is miniature but human!"
The Defender frowned as his armor suddenly stiffened and he felt the full weight of the advanced radiation suit.

"Something has damaged my armor!" he said slowly.

He gasped as he realized all his weaponry was beginning to lose power!

A tiny man emerged from within the armor itself and stood defiantly on his shoulder. The red and black costumed Microbe said, "Fascinating! Your armor is far more advanced than anything Luthor has but it is clearly a modification of his design!"

As the blue and gold clad Dr. Chaos appeared in a cloud of smoke, the magical stone that held Ultra Man shattered.

"Thanks for nothing!" growled Ultra Man as he broke free and began to batter the now helpless Defender!

The Persuader was under attack by Deadeye and Silk Canary as well as by the somber hooded Sundown who used his uncanny power plunge the area into total darkness!

Once more Persuader used his atomic axe to do what would have seemed impossible for anyone else!

He used it to cut through the strange inky cloud and let in the light of day! Sundown was so surprised that he hesitated just long enough to receive a terrible blow from the spinning axe! He collapsed as the Silk Canary pulled him backward while Deadeye fired another arrow!

The Persuader cursed as the arrow released a gooey substance that coated his gloves and left the handle of the axe glued to his grip. He could neither release the axe nor adjust its position!

Deadeye grinned roguishly as he dived forward and began to knock the hapless hero flat!

In seconds the skilled fighter had removed Persuader's helmet and knocked him cold!

"How's the human blackout?" he asked his lover.

Silk Canary said, "Ollie, this is serious! I think he's dying!"

Deadeye winced as his lover accidentally used his real name. He knew she was very capable but her lethal abilities were still new to her and she occasionally made mistakes like using his real name in front of enemies!

Ultra Man raised one fist over Urthlo's face and said, "You look like Luthor too! Are you the old creep's long lost son or something?"

As the Green Guardian generated more energy to shield Urthlo, she was struck from behind by a eldritch bolt from Dr. Chaos!

She lost her concentration for a moment and Power Ring struck her with a huge boxing glove!
As she fought to regain control, she was aware of a newcomer who appeared out of thin air!

The young woman had long platinum blonde hair and wore a white dress and heels. She seemed to replicate or separate into multiple separate selves and as each one touched a Faultless Five member or Urthlo and Computer, they vanished!

Ultra Man blinked in surprise. He had enhanced sensory powers but for the most part he failed to use them properly. As the Superman of Earth 1 had once said, "the brute lacks the brain power to properly use his super powers!"

"What happened to them? They sure worked over Sundown, Rubberneck, Quick, and Superwoman!"
                                      he said.

Microbe said, "They used a combination of alien and futuristic science. I think they may be time travelers!"

Ultra Man frowned, "Say, that means that punk may have been ole Luthor's kid or grandkid!"

Owlman said, "Look at it this way, old chum, that just means there will be more Luthors for you to kill someday!"

Ultra Man grinned at the closest thing he had to a friend as he said, "Yeah! I like that."

Meanwhile, Gloriana had spirited the heroes back through time. Her powers were fueling the damaged time bubble and she had made a brief introduction.

"My stasis fields will allow you all to heal. I can speed that process up for you all with my own powers. None of you will die!" she said.

As Cyborg's broken metallic hull began to reform itself and Defender's armor repowered, the other fallen heroes revived slowly as well.

Mano said, "My arm is almost as good as new but that Owl headed killer broke it!"

Gloriana said, "I am not allowed to change history but I was given permission to rescue you and put you back in your proper era. My father the Time Keeper will not allow anyone to alter history in this dimension. He insists that this dimension is entirely too fragile for any type of chronal alteration!"

The Green Guardian said, "I have met your father as has Mano. He saved us and indeed, he preserved all of what some call Earth 3. I suppose we can't really argue with his reasoning. What he did must never be undone even if that means the history of the Crime Syndicate and their heirs must remain intact!"

Urthlo said, "Computer, I am sorry I let you down. I tried to fight back but they were too much for me! I think they may be even worse than our own Cabal of Super Criminals!"

Computo said, "My own calculations were flawed. How Braianic would laugh at my folly!"

Gloriana said, "I hate to hear you all give up so soon! I can't change time here because of the reasons I already told you but there are other timelines in other parallel universes as you know. I can at least shift you to one of those where you might recruit new allies! Father would not object to beings from outside our own dimension, leaving their dimension and entering his timeline! While potent barriers separated the Earths from one another in the twentieth century, as you…Green Guardian… recall from your own time in what some call Earth 1, such borders no longer exist in the 30th centrury!"

Urthlo said, "Are you saying we have counterparts on other Earths and they might help us?"

Gloriana said, "You do have doubles but they have significant roles of their own to play in their universes. I will give Computo access to data that will guide him to potential allies who would not have been men and women of destiny in the natural scheme of things but may well become champions if brought to your own proper era and universe!"

Urthlo said, "I'll take all the help I can get!"

Urthlo and Computo found themselves looking up at an impressive complex that stretched across a city block. Metropolis was beautiful and while it resembled the futuristic city Urthlo lived in, he also felt that this Metropolis of an alternate future timeline was a happier place.

"No doubt the people who live in this universe don't have to live in constant fear that the Cabal is going to attack at any moment! I envy them! Perhaps if we recruit the right allies from this place we will someday be able to experience the same kind of freedom in our own world!" he said.

Computo replied, "This timeline has been designated as the Adult Legion era by the natives of the main Earth 1 timeline who have visited or studied this divergent era. There are benign counterparts to the Cabal members of our universe in this place. For example, while our Mind Mistress is an evil woman, her counterpart here is a heroine known as Saturn Woman. "

Urthlo said, "I know the members of the Five didn't join us when Gloriana deposited us here because in this universe they are viewed as deadly criminals but I'd still like some additional support!"
Computo said, "The Brainiac 5 of this universe is as brilliant as my creator but he has dedicated his keen mind toward the betterment of the universe!"

Urthlo said, "Forget about him! We can't approach any of the Legion of Super Heroes. That's what the good version of the Cabal is called and Gloriana said they are so essential to this timeline that we can't afford to ask them to join us in our universe."

Computo said, "Correct. I was merely indulging in intellectual speculation. It is a flaw in my programming. We must leave this plaza. It is the location in which the heroes are based! That complex is their headquarters! It is an inspiring sight!"

Before Urthlo could reply, several strange things happened at once! Four large spherical objects descended from the sky and hovered ominously in front of the HQ of the Legion of Super Heroes. The objects were nearly transparent but the content of each sphere was puzzling at best. Each sphere contained what appeared to be an enlarged brain floating in some kind of protective or nutritious fluid.

In the wake of the weird objects came six costumed super beings. They all flew after the spheres but none of them spoke of displayed any expression. They were clearly entranced.

"Those things have taken over the Legion!" whispered Urthlo as he recognized counterparts for some of the Cabal of his universe.

"Lightning Man, Saturn Woman, Cosmic Man, Sun Man, Polar Man, and Timber Wolf ! Those are the designations for the flying humanoids. A routine scan of their respiration and other vital sign suggests that they have indeed been robbed of their free will!" said Computo!

Defender activated a feature on his armor and faded from view.

"The invisibility feature works well but really places a drain of the system! Do you think I shielded us in time?" he whispered.

Computo said, "Affirmative. The mentally clouded heroes would not have spotted us nor have their controllers!"

Defender said, "What are those weird things?"

Computo said, "Based purely upon information I have gleaned from the closest computerized counterpart I have in this universe, they are an alien race colloquially known as the Brain Globes of Rambat! They are the preserved remnants of a lost race. They exist as almost completely intellectual beings with little or no physical form beyond the protective matter that encircles them! Among their mental powers is the ability to totally dominate human minds if given an appropriate time for mental domination!"

Defender said, "Will my armor shield me from their control?"

Computo said, "Negative! It will conceal from them but if they detect you, you may fall under their enslavement unless rapid attacks prevent them from concentrating long enough to overpower your mind!"

Defender noticed that in addition to the enslaved and colorfully costumed flying heroes, dozens of ordinary citizens around the plaza were also under the mental control of the Brain Globes.

"How can I free all those people? I assume if I'm spotted the Brain Globes will order their pawns to attack me!" he thought.

"Apparently the Brain Globes plan on using these captive heroes as their enforcers while they gradually assume control of the entire population! The Legion of this alternate era is much smaller than the one that exists in what many call the main timeline!" said Computo.

Defender said, "What about the allies Gloriana sent us to recruit? None of them are members of the Legion. Are they still free? Can you use the data you have to locate them before they are also enslaved?"

Computo said, "Data suggests that two of them may be here now!"

A short young man with bright green hair and lighter green skin walked calmly into view and deliberately attracted the Brain Globes.

As they drew closer to him along with their Legion slaves, a strange transformation took place. The boy shifted shape and became a massive tree with elongated tendrils that wrapped around the nearest globe and began to crush it!

"Astounding! That boy turned into a Venusian Snake Plant!" gasped the Defender.

Sun Man responded to some mental command from the threatened Brain Globe and swooped down to burn the roots of the weird plant!

At that moment a red hued female form flew into his path and absorbed the heat long enough for the plant to exert added pressure on its captive! Polar Man approached and tried to freeze the fiery female figure but a second blue hued twin to the first woman intercepted his icy blast! Before either of the captive Legionnaires could fight back, a third woman with glowing green skin darted forward and knocked them into one another. Clearly their reaction times were greatly reduced by their captive minds. A final yellow female, who looked exactly like the other three except for the brilliant golden color of her body, approached and as her body flickered in a pattern of golden flashes the hypnotically helpless duo blinked and emerged from their trances!

"Thank goodness! I can think again!" said Sun Man as he blazed skyward and engulfed the Brain Globe being battered by tree in a barrage of fireballs.

Polar Man guarded his friend's back as their enslaved partners came down to free their master!

"I can't do much against the others but my icy wall will at least slow them down!" thought Polar Man
as he generated a barricade of solid ice!

"The green hued boy is apparently immune to their mind control because of his plant-like nature!"
said Computo. "He was one of the potential allies I was planning to contact. His name is Plant Lad and while he was presumed dead at one time, his remarkable metabolism allowed him to return to new vitality like a germinating plant."

"The multi-colored phantasms are in fact manifestations of one woman. Her name is Rainbow and she has several potentially impressive powers. Now, she only uses the ability to emit four colorful energy doubles with a single power found in each one!"

Urthlo said, "She's freed Polar Man and Sun Man but she can't hold off all the Legionnaires."

He gestured to where Saturn Woman, Cosmic Man, Lightning Man, and Timber Wolf were circling the embattled Plant Lad and Rainbow Girl.

At that moment a ruggedly handsome blond man in a green jacket and white pants came bounding forward with the agility of a panther!

He concentrated and the four entranced Legionnaires transformed into gorillas! The altered heroes stopped menacing their friends and turned to attack the other three Brain Globes!

Computo said, "He is known as Animal Lad. He can transform humans into animals among other powers. The Globes seem powerless to control animals or these animal-human hybrids!"

As Animal Man waited the battle shifted and the freed if altered heroes began to battered the Brain Globes with a barrage of energy bolts, magnetic power, and mental attacks!

The four Globes finally fled leaving the slightly confused heroes to face Animal Lad, Rainbow Girl, and Plant Lad. Plant Lad had changed back into his human form and the four energy beings had merged back into the body of a very pretty woman in a purple mini dress and boots.

Animal Lad cancelled the alteration that had changed the heroes into gorillas and he said, "You will all be fine. I knew those things could not control animals. I have a mental link with the natural world. I figured if I changed you all into my hybrid beasts, you would regain your free will!"

Lightning Man said, "Ennis, you saved the day. All of you did! I'm glad to see you are here Plant Lad. We all thought your death was final!"

Plant Lad shook his head as he replied, "I got better."

Rainbow Girl said, "I suppose it was good fortune that brought us all together today! I knew my spectrum sisters were safe from mind control sine they are mindless energy beings but I couldn't risk getting too close to the Globes. It was lucky we were all immune to the Brain Globe mind control."

The Defender shut off his shielding and said, "No, it was destiny. I'm called the Defender. I need heroes to help me in my native universe. Would the three of you be willing to join me? I have been told that no Legionnaire could do so without disturbing time!"

Rainbow Girl, Plant Lad, and Animal Lad agreed readily. They were delighted with their sudden and unexpected triumph and the three were eager to feel useful.

Sun Man said, "We have a few questions of our own. You showed up at just the right moment. Exactly who are you?"

Saturn Woman placed one hand on her friend's arm as she said, "Dirk, it is okay. I can vouch for him. He speaks the truth and we can't go with him without creating the kind of temporal chaos that would give Brainy what he'd call a three pipe problem!"

Urthlo smiled at the lovely blonde and he said, "Thank you for your trust. We fight for the same side if that helps any!"

The trio joined Defender as he and Computo returned to the Time Bubble where Gloriana and the Fautless Five waited.

"These are our allies. They are willing to come back to our universe and help us!" said Urthlo.

The Green Guardian said, "Don't be afraid. We aren't the villains you've seen in your universe!"

Rainbow Girl said, "I'm glad. I don't think a few colorful beings could stand up against the real Fatal Five!"

As Gloriana enabled the Time Bubble to carry them back to their own era and universe, Urthlo thought about all that had happened to him since the first evening in the museum.

"I'm not a hero yet but I'm trying. With help from friends like these and possibly some new recruits from my universe, I might yet be able to challenge the Cabal!" he thought.

Meanwhile, Computo thought, " Based on data I accessed from the good Legion's computers via remote access, I surmise Saturn Queen, Nemesis Kid, Spider- Girl are just a few of the villains of Earth 1 who might have well-intentioned counterparts in our universe. We may have an army of our own in time!"

It was in truth a beginning!

Urthlo and Computo found themselves looking up at an impressive complex that
stretched across a city block. Metropolis was beautiful and while it
resembled the futuristic city Urthlo lived in, he also felt that this
Metropolis of an alternate future timeline was a happier place.

"No doubt the people who live in this universe don't have to live in
constant fear that the Cabal is going to attack at any moment! I envy them!
Perhaps if we recruit the right allies from this place we will someday be
able to experience the same kind of freedom in our own world!" he said.

Computo replied, "This timeline has been designated as the Adult Legion era
by the natives of the main Earth 1 timeline who have visited or studied this
divergent era. There are benign counterparts to the Cabal members of our
universe in this place. For example, while our Mind Mistress is an evil
woman, her counterpart here is a heroine known as Saturn Woman. "

Urthlo said, "I know the members of the Five didn't join us when Gloriana
deposited us here because in this universe they are viewed as deadly
criminals but I'd still like some additional support!"
Computo said, "The Brainiac 5 of this universe is as brilliant as my creator
but he has dedicated his keen mind toward the betterment of the universe!"

Urthlo said, "Forget about him! We can't approach any of the Legion of Super
Heroes. That's what the good version of the Cabal is called and Gloriana
said they are so essential to this timeline that we can't afford to ask them
to join us in our universe."

Computo said, "Correct. I was merely indulging in intellectual speculation.
It is a flaw in my programming. We must leave this plaza. It is the location
in which the heroes are based! That complex is their headquarters! It is an
                                            inspiring sight!"

Before Urthlo could reply, several strange things happened at once! Four
large spherical objects descended from the sky and hovered ominously in
front of the HQ of the Legion of Super Heroes. The objects were nearly
transparent but the content of each sphere was puzzling at best. Each sphere
contained what appeared to be an enlarged brain floating in some kind of
                                            protective or nutritious fluid.

In the wake of the weird objects came six costumed super beings. They all
flew after the spheres but none of them spoke of displayed any expression.
                                            They were clearly entranced.

"Those things have taken over the Legion!" whispered Urthlo as he recognized
counterparts for some of the Cabal of his universe.

"Lightning Man, Saturn Woman, Cosmic Man, Sun Man, Polar Man, and Timber
Wolf ! Those are the designations for the flying humanoids. A routine scan
of their respiration and other vital sign suggests that they have indeed
been robbed of their free will!" said Computo!

Defender activated a feature on his armor and faded from view.

"The invisibility feature works well but really places a drain of the
system! Do you think I shielded us in time?" he whispered.

Computo said, "Affirmative. The mentally clouded heroes would not have
spotted us nor have their controllers!"

Defender said, "What are those weird things?"

Computo said, "Based purely upon information I have gleaned from the closest
computerized counterpart I have in this universe, they are an alien race

remnants of a lost race. They exist as almost completely intellectual beings
with little or no physical form beyond the protective matter that encircles
them! Among their mental powers is the ability to totally dominate human
minds if given an appropriate time for mental domination!"

Defender said, "Will my armor shield me from their control?"

Computo said, "Negative! It will conceal from them but if they detect you,
you may fall under their enslavement unless rapid attacks prevent them from
concentrating long enough to overpower your mind!"

Defender noticed that in addition to the enslaved and colorfully costumed
flying heroes, dozens of ordinary citizens around the plaza were also under
the mental control of the Brain Globes.

"How can I free all those people? I assume if I'm spotted the Brain Globes
will order their pawns to attack me!" he thought.

"Apparently the Brain Globes plan on using these captive heroes as their
enforcers while they gradually assume control of the entire population! The
Legion of this alternate era is much smaller than the one that exists in
what many call the main timeline!" said Computo.

Defender said, "What about the allies Gloriana sent us to recruit? None of
them are members of the Legion. Are they still free? Can you use the data
you have to locate them before they are also enslaved?"

Computo said, "Data suggests that two of them may be here now!"

A short young man with bright green hair and lighter green skin walked
calmly into view and deliberately attracted the Brain Globes.

As they drew closer to him along with their Legion slaves, a strange
transformation took place. The boy shifted shape and became a massive tree
with elongated tendrils that wrapped around the nearest globe and began to
                                            crush it!

"Astounding! That boy turned into a Venusian Snake Plant!" gasped the
                                            Defender.

Sun Man responded to some mental command from the threatened Brain Globe and
swooped down to burn the roots of the weird plant!

At that moment a red hued female form flew into his path and absorbed the
heat long enough for the plant to exert added pressure on its captive! Polar
Man approached and tried to freeze the fiery female figure but a second blue
hued twin to the first woman intercepted his icy blast! Before either of the
captive Legionnaires could fight back, a third woman with glowing green skin
darted forward and knocked them into one another. Clearly their reaction
times were greatly reduced by their captive minds. A final yellow female,
who looked exactly like the other three except for the brilliant golden
color of her body, approached and as her body flickered in a pattern of
golden flashes the hypnotically helpless duo blinked and emerged from their
                                            trances!

"Thank goodness! I can think again!" said Sun Man as he blazed skyward and
engulfed the Brain Globe being battered by tree in a barrage of fireballs.

Polar Man guarded his friend's back as their enslaved partners came down to
                                            free their master!

"I can't do much against the others but my icy wall will at least slow them
                                            down!" thought Polar Man
as he generated a barricade of solid ice!

"The green hued boy is apparently immune to their mind control because of
                                            his plant-like nature!"
said Computo. "He was one of the potential allies I was planning to contact.
His name is Plant Lad and while he was presumed dead at one time, his
remarkable metabolism allowed him to return to new vitality like a
                                            germinating plant."

"The multi-colored phantasms are in fact manifestations of one woman. Her
name is Rainbow and she has several potentially impressive powers. Now, she
only uses the ability to emit four colorful energy doubles with a single
                                            power found in each one!"

Urthlo said, "She's freed Polar Man and Sun Man but she can't hold off all
                                            the Legionnaires."

He gestured to where Saturn Woman, Cosmic Man, Lightning Man, and Timber
Wolf were circling the embattled Plant Lad and Rainbow Girl.

At that moment a ruggedly handsome blond man in a green jacket and white
pants came bounding forward with the agility of a panther!

He concentrated and the four entranced Legionnaires transformed into
gorillas! The altered heroes stopped menacing their friends and turned to
attack the other three Brain Globes!

Computo said, "He is known as Animal Lad. He can transform humans into
animals among other powers. The Globes seem powerless to control animals or
                                            these animal-human hybrids!"

As Animal Man waited the battle shifted and the freed if altered heroes
began to battered the Brain Globes with a barrage of energy bolts, magnetic
                                            power, and mental attacks!

The four Globes finally fled leaving the slightly confused heroes to face
Animal Lad, Rainbow Girl, and Plant Lad. Plant Lad had changed back into his
human form and the four energy beings had merged back into the body of a
very pretty woman in a purple mini dress and boots.

Animal Lad cancelled the alteration that had changed the heroes into
gorillas and he said, "You will all be fine. I knew those things could not
control animals. I have a mental link with the natural world. I figured if I
changed you all into my hybrid beasts, you would regain your free will!"

Lightning Man said, "Ennis, you saved the day. All of you did! I'm glad to
see you are here Plant Lad. We all thought your death was final!"

Plant Lad shook his head as he replied, "I got better."

Rainbow Girl said, "I suppose it was good fortune that brought us all
together today! I knew my spectrum sisters were safe from mind control sine
they are mindless energy beings but I couldn't risk getting too close to the
Globes. It was lucky we were all immune to the Brain Globe mind control."

The Defender shut off his shielding and said, "No, it was destiny. I'm
called the Defender. I need heroes to help me in my native universe. Would
the three of you be willing to join me? I have been told that no Legionnaire
could do so without disturbing time!"

Rainbow Girl, Plant Lad, and Animal Lad agreed readily. They were delighted
with their sudden and unexpected triumph and the three were eager to feel
                                            useful.

Sun Man said, "We have a few questions of our own. You showed up at just the
right moment. Exactly who are you?"

Saturn Woman placed one hand on her friend's arm as she said, "Dirk, it is
okay. I can vouch for him. He speaks the truth and we can't go with him
without creating the kind of temporal chaos that would give Brainy what he'd
                                            call a three pipe problem!"

Urthlo smiled at the lovely blonde and he said, "Thank you for your trust.
We fight for the same side if that helps any!"

The trio joined Defender as he and Computo returned to the Time Bubble where
Gloriana and the Fautless Five waited.

"These are our allies. They are willing to come back to our universe and
                                            help us!" said Urthlo.

The Green Guardian said, "Don't be afraid. We aren't the villains you've
                                            seen in your universe!"

Rainbow Girl said, "I'm glad. I don't think a few colorful beings could
stand up against the real Fatal Five!"

As Gloriana enabled the Time Bubble to carry them back to their own era and
universe, Urthlo thought about all that had happened to him since the first
                                            evening in the museum.

"I'm not a hero yet but I'm trying. With help from friends like these and
possibly some new recruits from my universe, I might yet be able to
                                            challenge the Cabal!" he thought.

Meanwhile, Computo thought, " Based on data I accessed from the good
Legion's computers via remote access, I surmise Saturn Queen, Nemesis Kid,
Spider- Girl are just a few of the villains of Earth 1 who might have
well-intentioned counterparts in our universe. We may have an army of our
                                            own in time!"

It was in truth a beginning!

                                            The End

BTW, I liked your used of three rather obscure characters from the Silver Age, especially Animal Lad. I always thought he had potential. In fact, I once began (but never finished, as per usual) a story that showed that he was what Kamandi the Last Boy on Earth had become in the Legion's timeline, had the Great Disaster never occurred. I really ought to get back to that story someday.
