Hi, How are you intrepreting the description for exercise 3.  It
      reads,

"Unifying Concepts:  This exercise asks teachers to focus on their
knowledge of unifying concepts.  Teachers will describe a major idea
in science, explain a concept from each of the major sciences and
relate the concepts to the major idea."

Several co-teachers and I have different opinions as to which
constitutes a major idea vs. a concept.  Any examples or advice would
be helpful as the NBPTS guide uses conflicting terminology.

      Thanks,

This is where you will use the NSTA standards book.  Look in the section on unifying concepts.  If you don't have a copy they are:

      Systems, Order, and Organization

      Evidence, Models, and Explanations

      Constancy, Change, and Measurement

      Evolution and Equilibrium

      Form and Function

The explanations are in that section.  If you don't have a copy of the NSTA standards book, go to the NSTA website and you can read the explanations from the Pathways to the Science Standards (Middle School Edition) on-line.
