Alaerian and I are trying to finish up an article that discusses, among other things, the Enochian governors and what we take as a magical blind in the work of Dee.
The governors are dictated May 21 and 22, 1584. Unfortunately this is material that, as far as I know, we have yet to have an accurate copy of in print.
David Hulse, in _The Key of It All_ pp. 185-200_, lists the Governors and various correspondences, including the sigil associated with each. Some of his governor names appear to have typos when connected to _A True and Faithful Relation_; I have yet to determine if the typos are introduced by Hulse or Hulse is correcting Casaubon. But that should be fairly easy compared to the next problem: the 91 governor sigils.
On June 25, 1584, the four sigils were dictated for the four Watchtowers. Ok, got that. Now
Hulse notes that after June 25, 1584, Dee and Kelley both separately tried to correct the Watchtowers. Okay, got that too. But then Hulse says that (page 185) "Dee tabled out the 91 governors names
. Upon further observation Dee discovered that the 91 names of the Governors in capitals were intricately intertwined in a complex order upon the 644 squares of the Watchtowers. No two names had the same pattern."
this is true of the pattern, but Hulse never says where in the angelic diaries Dee "discovered" this, and I can't find it. It doesn't seem to be in Sloane 3191. Right now I'm slowly working through the Cotton Appendices.
Then Hulse says (185) that "Dee therefore created a sigil for each of the 91 Governor names based on the squares on the Watchtowers."
Indeed you can do this, and we have. I cannot for the life of me find where Dee does this.
Others beyond Hulse have shown these sigils. David R. Jones, in his article "The System of Enochian Magick, Part II: The Evolution of the Tablets," available on-line at http://hermetic.com/enochia/system_enochian_magick_2.html
, presents the same sigils. He gives as a source Geoffrey James, The Enochian Evocation of Dr. John Dee, (Gillette, NJ: Heptangle, 1983), pp. 101-115.
Do any of you have James' book and know if James cites a particular manuscript where he finds these sigils?
I am trying to determine whether the sigils as given by Hulse and Jones actually appear in Dee manuscripts, or if they are something James or someone else came up with. In particular, I am wondering if they might be in MS. Ashmole 1790 (20ff.), which I don't have a copy of. (I'm using the on-line material provided by the Magickal Review at http://www.themagickalreview.org/enochian/mss/,
and this particular manuscript was too expensive to be reproduced.
Thanks for any insight anyone can shed on this problem!
