Aprtment Conversions into Condominiums
The Oakland Planning Commission has a hearing on the proposal to make it easier for property owners to convert apartments (such as the ones most of us on this listerv live in) into condominiums. The hearing is
Wednesday, November 1, at 6 p.m. at Oakland City Hall . Ground floor, hearing room 1.
Currently, landlords cannot convert apartment units into condo units unless they build new apartment units to replace the ones theyare converting. The Oakland Planning Commission will be debating whether or not to eliminate this "replacement" provision.
If the replacement provision is eliminated, as many as 1,500 apartment units citywide could be converted into condos each year. Many of these conversions are likely to occur in our neighborhood. If this happens to your apartment, your unit would be sold at "Market Price" and if you cannot afford it, there is a good chance you will be evicted.
If you would like to speak out in favor or against this proposal, come out on
