  • I just had another thought... I wonder if it could have something to do with the difference in volume between 50/50% alcohol/water vapour and 95/5% alcohol vapour. and also the volume of hot and cold liquid alcohol/water. I will have a think about it and I bet this could have more answers to give... Of course, should I really give a stuff?!?! I've distilled it now, all is well...

  • Thanks for the replies guys, Two things were discussed, one being the need for the safety feature of having a vent and as Kirtg mentioned the need for the vent because of the differences in volumes of vapour and liquid.... As the liquid is boiled in the boiler one part of liquid occupies 1cc- when it turns into vapour it occupies 50cc. then when it is condensed at the reflux...

  • Hi Morgan, Thanks for giving it a go. Unfortunately this couldn't be the case as the product condenser was fully closed as I was in the first equilibrium stage where it was just running at full reflux. :) I seem to remember having problems when I first built the still in that it needed this vent/breather to gain equilibrium. ? hmmmm, it must be written down somewhere. That is of...

  • Hi Guys, I long time ago I was an active member of this forum; I was learning distilling and think I did learn a lot. Anyway I did a run on the weekend (my only run in about 18 months) and had a few problems. It seems I've lost my touch! I managed to finish the day as expected and didn't have too many problems. ' One question that came up from the weekend and one I had years ago...

  • Hi Guys, The info on the bad of a pack of still spirts turbo yeast extra, reads... 25 Litre Mix 9 Kgs dextrose with water up to 25 litres. add 1 sachet of turbo extra. (we recommesnd dextrose for best results. if using white sugar use 8Kgs only). I think it should be more like this... sanatise all your equipment - mix up 25 litres of water @25degrees C - add whole packet of yeast...

  • Hi Upnorth, It was for new ideas like this I joined this forum in the first place!... I think your idea will work but if your after easy of construction/ cost effective and excelent results you can't go past a basic vapour management still - for some reason everyone seems to have forgoten about this design - I made a few types of stills untill I made a vapour management still ( I...

  • Hi dean Nice drawings!... your proposed still plans look exactly what I made a while back with the exception of.. where your liebig joins the column I have a gate valve that allows me to control how much vapour is let into the liebig- if the little circle with a dot in the middle is your valve - vapour would condense before the liebig and pool above the condenser possibly with...
