        In Russia it is only in 1515 that there is a written reference to 'goryachoye vino'(burnt/hot wine) which corresponds to the German, 'branntwein', and in 1578 to foreigners selling 'aqua vita'. But it is only in 1588 that there is written evidence to local distillation of spirits. 

        National pride tends to ignore solid evidence!
