RE: [Distillers] question about distilling temp... please help!
I really need to get round to posting some pics of my still – I run a modified version of that design but have three cooling pipes through the still and separate cooling for the leibig – I run at around 80 degrees and get 95 % all the time.
I take the view if it’s happy then I don’t mess with it.
Cheers from Peers
I ran my first small batch through a reflux still that is based on the internal reflux still from www.moonshine-still.com .
I ran 1.75L of 40% Vodka and diluted it to a 20% solution with equal parts water giving me 3.5L of a 20% alc solution. I ran this through the still and noticed I really could not keep the temp at 78 celsius. It seemed to run at about 80 celsius.
I tried the entire time to mess with the heat and get it at 78 celsius but while adjusting it it would not go below 79-80 celsius without starting to dramitically decline in temp. I would turn the heat down little by little waiting a few minutes between adjustments trying to get it to 78 celsius but it would do nothing and then suddenly the temp would drop swiftly to about 73 celsius. It seemed as if I couldnt get it to hold at 78 celsius but it held just fine at 80 celsius.
My first question is if running my still at 80 celsius (a realize it is a bit high) would be detrimental to the ethanol quality or if I would get anything bad out of the still. Would I still get 90-95% alc running it this high?
Second question is wondering if anyone can explain why my still would be doing this.
