If you are using an alcohol hydrometer that is only for measuring the
strength of the alcohol once you have distilled it, it will not give you a
reading on the alcohol strength of your mash. The only easy way to measure
the strength of your mash is to take the starting specific gravity with a
beer/wine hydrometer and the finishing specific gravity and divide the
      difference by 7.36

        Hi,
I'm new to the group and am currently in the process of fermenting my
first mash. I'm going with a water/sugar/turbo wash and it is on the
third day. It has been bubbling pretty good but when I went to check it
with the hydrometer today, it's reading 0 alchohol so far. Does anyone
have a sure-fire recipe for about 20 litres of this wash , that seems to
be a common still size and no book or site I have comes out and gives
exact figures for a "recipe", they are all pretty vague.
        Thanks,
        Dan
