      Copper mesh removes sulphides. Raschig rings do not. Copper mesh
      has a much greater surface area than raschig rings for a given
      volume of column. Therefore separation is much better with copper
      mesh.

      6 mm Raschig rings..... 140 m2/m3
      13 mm Raschig rings.... 40 m2/m3
      Copper mesh............ 800 m2/m3


      Copper mesh packed columns can actually be built shorter, as the
      HETP for copper mesh is roughly half the height of a column packed
      with 6mm raschig rings, and nearly quarter the height of 13mm
      raschig rings.

      ....Packing............ HETP
      6 mm Raschig rings..... 23 cm
      13 mm Raschig rings.... 36 cm
      Copper mesh............ 10 cm



      Raschig rings are designed more for large commercial columns and are
      expensive. Copper mesh is more suited to small diameter columns
      (100mm and under) and is cheap and readily available.

      Tony Ackland's Homedistiller site explains all this. He doesn't
      specifically compare copper but he does compare stainless steel
      wool, and copper is physically its equal or even better.
