      Stick it in boiling water and it should read 100 degrees no matter how
      vigorously it boils (and you dont touch the bottom of the saucepan). So
      long as it's at sea level or close to. You chuck a few ice blocks in a
      small amount of water until it is as cold as you can get it, i.e. ice
      lasts a long time in the water or a water slurry from the freezer
      prepared earlier, and that should be zero (or damn close).

      Yup the Dick Smith thing... The one that came with the still doesn't
      have a name on it (but it can't be right). DS is gotta be nearer the
      mark... surely it's gonna be hard to determine temps in boiling
      water ?? I'll give it a go and see what it says...
