      Hi Des
To kick off the discussion on this list, I would like to make some comments
regarding the legality of Distilling world wide, I posted a discussion on another
list that I believed that the keeping distilling illegal had much more to do with
revenue gathering and protection of big business interests than it had to do with
the sobreity or health of the nation, this stirred up a bit of discussion with a
surprising number of people believing that it would be a bad thing for distilling
to be made legal in their parts of the world. It is my belief that there are many
people out there in Countries where it is illegal to distill who are distilling
anyway, many are using unsafe practices and inferior equipment, they are putting
their (and anyone else they give the alcohol to) health at risk. In New Zealand it
has been legal to own a still since 1990 and completely legal to distill alcohol
for your own use since October 1996, in that time huge advances have been made in
both still design and quality and range of products to the extent that now
distilling is completely safe and easy to do by anyone. There is simply no
incentive for people to use dodgy equipment or unsafe practices. One thing that was
particularly noticeable in the early days of distilling in New Zealand was that a
lot of people who had stills illegaly came out of the woodwork to seek advice.
