- Aug 6, 2014Well, I read the article !It arrived with what seemed like a Chest beating 'Howl' by Will Sloan and a 'BIG SPLASH' in the Water, but at the end it wasn't TARZAN - only a wet Johnny WeissMueller !It provided a new version of 'much ado about nothing' !Perhaps on the lighter side, his 'attention', and the article, served tell us - Dick Tracy is very much ALIVE !SYD in Trinidad-------Original Message-------From: dddegg17@... A new essay on Dick Tracy:
"The yellow-suited detective once starred in America’s favourite comic strip. He’s still alive—but is he vital? The story of how an icon of the American Establishment became a kitsch artifact."
"Unlike other comic heroes, Dick Tracy had a gun, and he used it. This made him popular from the beginning: 'a symbol of law and order,' in Gould’s words, 'who could dish it out to the underworld exactly as they dished it out, only better.'...To Gould, Tracy’s violence was not simply sadistic, but righteous."
As for the current team and strip:
"Since 2011, the comic has been written and illustrated by Mike Curtis and Joe Staton, lifelong fans whose approach has been playful, nostalgic, and self-aware. Their Tracy is steeped in references to the character’s history, but without the anger that made Gould’s strip a phenomenon, nor the sourness that grew before Gould retired."
