Low ratings for Detroit City Council, Conyers

DETROIT - A poll suggests Detroiters apparently don't think much of their City Council or its president, Monica Conyers.

An EPIC/MRA survey conducted for The Detroit News and Southfield's WXYZ-TV says 62 percent of 400 city residents polled from Friday through Monday rate the council as doing a poor job. Twenty-seven percent rate its performance "just fair," 8 percent "pretty good," 1 percent "excellent" and 1 percent undecided or refusing to answer.

The survey says 69 percent of those polled have an unfavorable opinion and 22 percent have a favorable opinion of Conyers, who became council president after Ken Cockrel Jr. took over as mayor in the wake of Kwame Kilpatrick's resignation.

The phone poll's error margin is 4.9 percentage points.

A message seeking comment was left after business hours at Conyers' office.
