Detroit and most other large Michigan cities followed a national trend last
year and saw a decline in murders, rapes and other violent crimes, according
to preliminary crime statistics for 2007 released Monday by the FBI.

The FBI pegged the number of murders reported in Detroit in 2007 at 383,
down 9 percent from the 421 murders reported in 2006.

Total incidents of violent crime reported in Detroit last year fell 8
      percent, to 19,683 from 21,391 in 2006.

Warren, Ann Arbor, Flint and Grand Rapids also showed drops in violent
crime, the FBI statistics show. The exceptions in Michigan among cities with
more than 100,000 people were Sterling Heights and Lansing, which showed

The nation experienced a 1.4 percent decrease in violent crime in 2007 and a
2.1 percent decrease in property crime, according to the preliminary FBI
