Actually, for a poor starving student, theres Craiglist.  I'm sure there are tons of Massage Therapists that are selling quality used Massage Tables.  You can even post in the massage section.  Maybe you could do the transaction in a public place like a park.

You could also call up massage schools in the Bay Area to see if they have used tables theyre selling.  Theres McKinnon Massage, NHI.  De Anza might even be selling some.  Also Commercial Massage Places like Body Therapy Center, Massage Envy, Kabuki Massage.

There's a meetup.com group in bay area for Professional Massage Therapists, you can ask if they're selling any.

You can go as cheap as Coscto or as expensive as you want but I have heard a lot of horrible Costco table stories (breaks easily, heavy, etc.)

I did invest in a custom craftworks table in 2005 when I was still a student at De Anza. Yes, they do custom-make your table so it can be a little pricier, but note that De Anza students get a discount and I got $100 discount on mine which brought my table to about $800 in the end. I consider it a lifetime investment and am very happy with the cutom-made features I got on it (ie. breast pockets - custom craftworks I believe, is the only company that makes that feature)

As a rule of thumb, try to get a table that YOU (and others) like getting a massage on.
