KeyNote: Getting it right: Evaluating Library Spaces & Services
Whether designing new spaces or remodeling existing ones, working from
past successes is crucial. Dr. Bernier and Dr. Kemp will share findings on
an IMLS-funded research project using surveys and video transcriptions
from 800 of the newest U.S. libraries. The presentation will highlight
four beneficial topics: how youth contribute to space design; alternatives
in youth seating; and actual youth feedback on what is most important to
them about YA designated library spaces. Another portion of the project
demonstrates the great potential of using simulated libraries for
evidence-based practice in general and specialized library design and

research to all situations.
Anthony Bernier, PhD Dr. Bernier teaches youth services. Hes a regular
columnist for the journal Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA), and author of
VOYAs YA Spaces of Your Dreams Collection (2012), and Transforming Young
Adult Services, (2013).
Dr. Jeremy W. Kemp, Ed.D Dr. Kemps work explores the ways librarians,
teachers and learners use communication technologies for education. He
co-founded the SLOODLE project (Second Life Object Oriented Distance
