Public ยท By Coalition of Immokalee Workers

Join the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and their allies for a spirited, art-filled action demanding justice for farmworkers in Wendy's supply chain!

As Wendy's shareholders convene their annual meeting in New York, farmworkers are calling on allies to take to the streets.
Let's send the message loud and clear: it's time for Wendy's to join the Fair Food Program and help put an end to "old-fashioned exploitation".

      BACKGROUND
Since the early 90s, farmworkers based in Immokalee, FL, have been organizing to transform an agriculture industry historically based on farmworker poverty and abuse. Demanding that the biggest buyers of tomatoes pay a small premium to support a living wage in the fields and purchase only from farms upholding a worker-designed code of conduct, farmworkers have effectively begun to reverse the exploitative "race to the bottom."

To date, eleven major food purchasers -- including some of Wendy's closest competitors: McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell and Subway -- have already joined the Fair Food Program.

In 2010, 90% of Florida's tomato growers, represented by the Florida Tomato Growers' Exchange (FTGE), agreed to implement the Fair Food Program on their farms. This watershed accord signaled the dawn of a "new day" for farmworkers' rights in Florida's fields. For the first time in history, farmworkers and participating buyers and growers are working together to eliminate wage theft, sexual harassment, physical abuse and forced labor in the agriculture industry.

But our work is not yet complete. Although Wendy's was informed long ago of the potential to do it's part, the corporation has thus far refused to take action. Instead, Wendy's high-volume, indiscriminate purchasing from Florida's tomato fields helps ensure a continued market for exploitative growers outside the Fair Food Program.
