Hedges: "The media, the church, the university, the Democratic Party, the arts, and labor unions-the pillars of the liberal class-have been bought off with corporate money and promises of scraps tossed to them by the narrow circles of power. Journalists, who prize access to the powerful more than they prize truth, report lies and propaganda to propel us into a war in Iraq. Many of these same journalists assured us it was prudent to entrust our life savings to a financial system run by speculators and thieves. Those life savings were gutted. The media, catering to corporate advertisers and sponsors, at the same time renders invisible whole sections of the population whose misery, poverty, and grievances should be the principal focus of journalism..."

Chris Hedges spent nearly 2 decades as a foreign correspondent in Central America, Middle East, Africa and Balkans, reporting for the Christian Science Monitor, National Public Radio and The New York Times. His books include Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle and American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America.

Events at Revolution Books during November....

      TUESDAY, Nov 2, 7:00pm
      OPEN HOUSE at Revolution Books
Wine, cheese, and meet the revolution. The world the way it is today, with all its horrors, must not and need not go on endlessly crushing the lives of the people. There is a way out and a way forward.

We'll get into the questions raised at the Harlem Stage event on Oct 29, the Dialogue between Cornel West and Carl Dix on "What Future for Our Youth?..." Over 600 came to hear this remarkable exchange Friday night.

"It was eye-opening to hear the sense of their emotional connection, not just words. This is huge, it matters so much and is so inspiring... Also looking at the audience, multi-generational, multi-ethnic, knowing that people will be going out and talking about this, the conversation will be continuing... Seeing and watching them hold to their own views in a beautiful conversation and collaboration."
      -- from 3 women college students, one Pakistani-American, one Mexican-American, one Jamaican-American.

Community observer from Brooklyn: "I liked the depth of the analysis, the internationalism, the humor, the comraderie between Dr. West and Mr. Dix. I liked the presentation that Mr. Dix put together in terms of its universal analysis and how he was able to draw in from his experiences and from common folks about what they should perceive they can gain from a revolutionary vision of the world -- how change is possible and how they can start from where they are and bring the revolution to themselves... This revolutionary movement is long overdue and badly needed. "

You can still bid in the Silent Auction for signed print donated to Revolution Books by Shepard Fairey and Glen E. Friedman of CORNEL WEST. Bid is currently at $130 and the winner will be announced at 8:30 Tuesday night.  To place your bid come to the bookstore, email us or call 212-691-3345.

Release Party and Celebration! for the
Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America

With the release of this historic document, everything that people think is possible, and impossible, comes under radical challenge. Come celebrate, pick up your copy, contribute to big promotional plans, feed in your ideas and questions.

This Constitution (Draft Proposal) is written with the future in mind. It is intended to set forth a basic model, and fundamental principles and guidelines, for the nature and functioning of a vastly different society and government than now exists: the New Socialist Republic in North America, a socialist state which would embody, institutionalize and promote radically different relations and values among people; a socialist state whose final and fundamental aim would be to achieve, together with the revolutionary struggle throughout the world, the emancipation of humanity as a whole and the opening of a whole new epoch in human history--communism-- with the final abolition of all exploitative and oppressive relations among human beings and the destructive antagonistic conflicts to which these relations give rise.
