FB: Nursing home and assisted living
- Some conclusions from Czechlist on Facebook:
assisted living - dum (byty) s pecovatelskou sluzbou
nursing home - domov pro seniory (applies in this particular case although elsewhere residents can also include younger adults with physical or mental disabilities - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nursing_home )
- Assisted living facilities are for people who can generally live on their own but need help with minor tasks that they are now too weak to handle themselves.
A nursing home is for people who are very disabled and may need help with almost everything, including getting out of bed, going to the toilet, taking a shower, taking their medication, eating, etc. They are largely inhabited by advanced Alzheimer's patients.
Both are mainly for the elderly, but some younger people who have physical or mental disabilities may live in them. Most nursing homes have a therapy component, so a young person who has had a stroke may stay there only temporarily until they are functioning again.
You put your mother in an assisted living facility when she can do everything for herself except, perhaps, carry laundry baskets up and downstairs and drive to go shopping. She lives in her own apartment there. The motivation is to make life easier for your mother while letting her live as normally as possible.
You put your mother in a nursing home when she has had four strokes, can't move her right hand, and can't walk to the toilet. She inhabits a bed in what looks exactly like a hospital room. The motivation for putting her there is that you can't afford to have two nurses at your own home 24 hours a day.
