Hi Otto,

It refers to the thickness of the sheet. For example:

"The module chassis is fabricated from "ZINTEC" pre-plated 1.2mm (18
gauge) steel plate"

• Thanks Simon for the solution, I though it had to be some sort of dimension but I was less sucessful than you in finding it. A diky take Vlaste za snahu. Otto

Hi Otto,

Vlasta's suggestion might correspond with a definition in Webster's:

"a unit of measure of the internal diameter of a shotgun barrel, determined by
the number of spherical lead bullets of a diameter equal to that of the bore
that are required to make one pound: a twelve-gauge shotgun"

I think I've encountered gauge as a unit of measure for thickness of steel
plates or sheets. I only remember the number represented the number of plates or
sheets of the thickness in a standardized dimension, perhaps an inch, but I'm
not sure if it was an inch or more or less. If it were an inch, then 18 gauge
stands for 1/18".
