Group Description

"Whaaaaaaaat, you're a cyclist, and you're against bike lanes? Why?", people asked our group's founder as he rode the streets with a "CYCLISTS AGAINST BIKE LANES" sign.

Well, the most knowledgable cyclists oppose vehicle-type-specific lane designations (popularly called "bike lanes") for several reasons. Right off the bat, "bike lanes" kill cyclists, certainly when they put cyclists in the door zone, as has been documented at www.bikexprt.com/massfacil/cambridge/doorzone/pressrls.htm

When there are any intersections or driveways around, "bike lanes" discourage proper lateral positioning in preparation for turns. Conflicts result, such as but not limited to, between right-turning motorists and straight-thru cyclists and between left-turning cyclists and straight-thru motorists.

Varieties of "bike lanes" that purport to address such problems by, for example, being to the left of the right-turn lane at intersections or by being "totally" away from intersections or door zones, do not impress us. We fight these varieties with less-tooth-and-nail vigor, but we still fight them. "Bike lanes" are a Trojan Horse that has been shown to lead to removal - whether by law or by harassment - of cycling from roads that don't have them.

We don't need our own lanes. Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles!
