      Verlayne,

I'm quite aware this is an "all-Ecuador" forum.

For 18 months, my wife and I lived north of
Guayaquil in a community near Puerta Azul
called "Torres del Salado."  None of us (or to
the best of my knowledge, our neighbors)
      suffered from this problem.

Granted, we never lived right on the coastline . . .
so perhaps there are pockets of problems there.

The point of my original post was to take issue
with your initial comment . . . where you stated
that diarrhea (presumably from bad water) was
quite prevalent.  That runs quite counter to my
experience and those of my ex-pat friends.

      Greg,

To start with we don't live in Cuenca but live on the coast.  I don't believe most of the people we've met, including ourselves, are
getting it from the water but from unclean habits related to the preparation of food.

If you have been in Ecuador for anytime, you would know that it is not safe to drink tap water on the coast.  We drink only
      bottled water.

This forum is not only about Cuenca but about all of Ecuador. As I consider "people that I know" as "people that I have actually met",
I stand by my statement.  I even know people from Cuenca who have experienced this problem.

      Verlayne . . .

You don't know any expat over 55 that hasn't had it?
      Really?

We'll now please add two to your list :  my wife and
I are both in our mid-50's and we've never had it.
Neither have my two neighbors (both in their mid-50's
as well).  So make it now four people you know who
have lived in Ecuador for year's and haven't suffered
      the ill-effects of bad water.

It makes my wonder where you're getting your water.

      Greg

It is rampant here in Ecuador.  I don't think I know any expat over 55 that hasn't had it.  The worst thing is that antibiotics and anti-parasite medicine are way overused here and the doctors will subscribe antibiotics, anti-parasite medicine and imodium every time you get it.  That means if you have it 3 times in six months, you will be on antibiotics and anti-parasite medicine 3 different times in that time period.  The best thing is to be cautious of what you eat and drink until you see how your system reacts.

      Steve,

This is a very individual thing.
My family lived in Guayaquil for 18 months,
and we've been in Cuenca since 2009.
None of the three of us have ever had
diarrhea or any other negative health
consequence as a result of the water.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles,
      and traveled to Mexico frequently,
so I know what Montezuma's Revenge
      is . . . but honestly, I haven't seen it here.
