Almeida presides over the Central Army’s initiation of the Year of Defense
      Preparation

BY ARMANDO SAEZ CHAVEZ —Granma daily staff writer—

CIENFUEGOS.— While war remains a danger, it will always be our duty to
prepare for it, confirmed Cuba’s national hero, José Martí. In that same
spirit and commemorating the 155th anniversary of his birth, yesterday saw
the Central Army’s start of the 2008 Year of Defense Preparation with a
political event and military ceremony presided over by Commander of the
Revolution and member of the Political Bureau, Juan Almeida Bosque.

Also present were Army Corps Generals Alvaro Lopez Miera, deputy minister of
the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) and Chief of Staff, and Joaquin Quintas
Solá, chief of the Central Army, as well as the presidents and vice
presidents of the Defense Councils from the five provinces that make up this
      command.

On behalf of the reservists, Yoel Rodríguez recalled how, in just a few
hours the whole population was mobilized following the proclamation from
Commander in Chief Fidel Castro and the call from Minister of the FAR Raúl
Castro to carry out Operation Caguairán, a clear signal for the enemies of
the north of the concept of the war of the entire people; more than just a
slogan, it is a conviction for all Cubans.

In the words of soldier Diomisley Llerena, the conviction was present in
young people like herself who today are members of the Las Celias
Detachment; young women who have joined the FAR as part of the Women’s
      Voluntary Military Service.

At the end of the event, Roberto Morales Ojeda, president of the Provincial
Defense Council of Cienfuegos, described as "satisfactory" the final
preparatory stage for defense structures, the leadership and command bodies,
and the readying of conditions for military operations in the territory
covered by the Central Army, which successfully ended with the 2007 Moncada
      Exercise.

The ceremony ended with a military review that included the participation of
the combatant blocs representing the different forces that make up Cuba’s
      defense system.
