US: Millions for Defense (to Media)

Washington, Dec 1 (Prensa Latina) The US military is paying out
multi-millions (in tax dollars) to payoff Iraqi journalists and plant
paid propaganda in Iraqi news media to combat the growing
anti-occupation sentiment in the Arab press.

This disclosure in Thursday┬┤s New York Times, based on statements by
military contractors and officials on condition of anonymity, comes
on the heels of the revelation that the US president wanted to bomb
      the well-known Qatari Al-Jazeera network.

Far from being the heartfelt opinion of Iraqi writers, many of the
stories are written by US troops, translated into Arabic by the
Washington-based Lincoln Group, and planted in Iraqi newspapers
without revealing the Pentagon role, the influential daily reported.

"The Sands Are Blowing Toward a Democratic Iraq" was one of several
in a list of articles delivered Tuesday to the Lincoln Group, which
was supposed to be delivered to Azzaman, a leading independent
newspaper, but it is not known whether it was published there or
      elsewhere.

These stories often praise the efforts of US and Iraqi troops,
denounce the insurgents, and promote the country's reconstruction
efforts as desired by the occupation forces, out of the mouths of
      fictional Iraqis.

The unidentified US military officials told the Times that the
Information Operations Task Force, part of a multinational corps with
headquarters in Baghdad, also bought an Iraqi newspaper and took over
a radio station to put out pro-American messages.
