- Obama Keeps Trade Sanctions on Cuba
HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 14 (acn) US President Barack Obama extended for another year the commercial sanctions imposed by Washington on Cuba.
In a memorandum addressed to the US secretaries of State and the Treasury, published by the White House, Obama ordered to keep the economic, commercial and financial blockade on the Caribbean nation, Granma newspaper reported.
According to US law, the US president decided to uphold sanctions on Cuba under the Trade with the Enemy Act, alleging that it is in tune with US national interests.
Washington has maintained its criminal and unilateral blockade on Cuba since 1961, which was stiffened in 1992 and 1996 following the adoption of the Torricelli and Helms Burton laws.
