- Telephone Services Reach Remote Cuban Region
HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 12 (acn) The settlements of more than 200 inhabitants nestled in the most remote places of the Escambray mountain range in the Cuban province of Cienfuegos have already telephone coverage.
Thus an old dream was fulfilled for the people living on the area of Guamuhaya range, Granma newspaper said.
Most of the connection system was articulated by alternative fixed telephony, with an equipment availability of three thousand minutes per month and double guarantee of consumption, both by the National Grid, and solar panels.
In addition 300 conventional landlines were installed and were also established relay centers in family homes or public terminals in various locations.
It wasn´t possible to provide telephony for small isolated hamlets, but amateur radio equipment or the Civil Defence enable communication for these communities.
Norberto Hernandez Sanchez, director of the Telecommunications Company of Cuba (ETECSA) in the municipality of Cumanayagua, Cienfuegos, explained that last year they repaired in the mountains cable networks and traffic stations, as well as systems of lightning protection.
The ETECSA official added it is expected in 2013 to increase other telephone services in the territory, including the sale of cards for charge and recharge, and the needed maintenance of technology enabled in the area.
