Globe-trotting chef/author Anthony Bourdain's next stop on his 'No Reservations' TV show is Cuba.CAPTIONBy Joe Brier, for USA TODAYOutspoken chef Anthony Bourdain brings his No Reservations Travel Channel show to Cuba tonight (9 p.m. ET/PT).
So what did he think about Havana, the food scene and people -- all off-limits to U.S. tourists unless visiting family in Cuba or coming in on a special visa?
"Beautiful ... amazing," he told me, citing the unspoiled architecture of Old Havana, the population's zest for life and baseball. Despite the fact that Cuba still is a communist country where spying on visitors is a fact of life -- as is rationing that prevents locals from eating much more than rice and beans and meat a few times a week while visitors get menus with unlimited steak -- he said he and his crew moved around fairly freely, spoke with average folk and that he had a great time sampling local culture, cuisine and rum. The Kitchen Confidential author says he was greeted warmly and that Cuba is a special place frozen in time that he felt lucky to see it while it is still unspoiled as is most every other major tourist city. He hopes that if it opens up to U.S. tourism Cuba can maintain its character.
