|Notes:|| ||They were classmates from the second grade through high school. They attended the same church in the small Virginia town. When they were in the fifth grade, his parents asked, "Who's your girlfriend? You might be kin to her. Both your grandfathers are distant relatives to her grandfather."|
On Valentine's Day in the seventh grade her father said "A tall, nervous young man brought this for you." It was a dime store necklace with a fake diamond and wedding ring on a chain and no card.
They went to the Junior Prom. Their first date was after church one night with another couple for a Coke and fries. They stopped on a hill and watched the movie on the drive-in screen a quarter-mile away. After that, they were together every possible minute. He chauffeured her wherever she needed to go in a Crosley with poor brakes. They sat very close together on the bench seat as they rode to and from activities nearly every day. They went to the movies, to record hops at school, or to his house to watch "Wild Kingdom" if his parents were going out for the evening.
In the summers, he worked at a wooden box factory or in his father's business. She worked at a hotel. He majored in mechanical engineering; she majored in music.
Her Dad insisted they date other people in college, but the picture of his girlfriend was taped inside the hat of his cadet uniform.
When they got married in their senior year, their parents had to sign for their license. He fainted while he was getting his blood test. They got married in the small living room of her house and had a three-day honeymoon before each had to return to college.
After graduation in 1960, they raised two successful sons and supported each other through one son's serious illness, her cancer scare, his heart attacks, and the ups and downs of his career as a design engineer and her career as a music teacher.
Bob and Jo Ann celebrated their 52nd anniversary in January 2012 and they like being together as much as ever.
