Title: September 20, 1940: "Cannon Ball" Baker returning East after swinging around LA.

      Date: Thursday September 20, 2012
      Time: 12:00 am - 12:00 am
Location: Big Spring, Texas., CROSLEY CAR OWNERS CLUB (CCOC)
Notes: "Cannon Ball" Baker, the man with the copyrighted name, came through Big Spring Thursday on a jaunt across the continent and back in order to publicize a new make of car.

He has made endurance, time and performance runs with all makes of cars and even a big gasoline truck and this time he comes through in a midget automobile.

"It's been an exciting life, and I've seen lots of people and country," Baker said in giving some of the high points of his strange career.

Three times he has been listed as a dead man. Once he was reported hanged for murder in Canada, and he was in Indiana at the time. Twice he has been reported killed in car wrecks, and he has been hurt only once in an accident in a car that was standing still.
Baker said he started in the business in 1906 as a mechanic near Indianapolis where motorcycle races were the
vogue. One day he entered a race in place of another entry and he won second place. Then the bug bit him. In the intervening years, "Cannon Ball" has driven for Rickenbacker,
Ford, Franklin and several other motor companies that are
credited with giving the automobile business the first boost.
It would be hard to correctly classify what kind of records Baker holds; he holds motorcycle endurance and speed records in addition to more car records than he can remember. The name "Cannon Ball" came to him when a newspaper used the
term to identify him. Pleased with the sound of the name, Baker took out copyright papers on it. Long ago he stopped signing his real name and now all papers of his carry the identifying mark of his trade. Now on a transcontinental test run for the Crosley motor people, "Cannon Ball" is making the return trip back East after swinging through Los Angeles and San Diego. Exactly on schedule and bettering the gasoline mileage expected from his car, he is confident that he will keep his record of successful runs through the years.
