Title: Thursday, September 19, 1940: Cannon Ball Baker Arrives in Big Spring.

      Date: Wednesday September 19, 2012
      Time: 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
      Location: Big Spring, Texas.
Notes: Cannon Ball Baker, veteran of 118 transcontinental tours, is motoring across the nation at a fuel cost of a third of a cent a mile, and he'll be in Big Spring Thursday night.
Holder of all the important speed and endurance automobile runs from coast-to-coast since 1915, Baker is averaging more than 60 miles to a gallon of gasoline in a 6,000 mile tour which takes him to Los Angeles and back again to New York for an appearance in the New York automobile show.
Baker left Cincinnati September 2 in a Crosley car following a schedule of some 300 miles per day to approximate the driving habits of the average motorist.
Baker weighs 225 pounds and his traveling companion 175, and car weight o the two men totals 1,580 pounds.
Hotels along the route have been made control points with the hotel managers as "control masters."
Baker's gasoline tank was locked when he left Cincinnati, and the will open it. They certify as to the amount of fuel he takes on for the continuation of his trip.
Baker will stop at the Settles here, and the hotel managers have keys which will open it. Tom Bradshaw, hotel manager, will supervise the re-fueling in Big Spring. The famed driver will arrive here from El Paso, and resume his Journey to Fort Worth Friday.
The complete record of the trip will be put on display at the New York automobile show with receipted bills and control station certificates.
Following the New York show Baker will continue his economy run to Chicago and appear at that show. The car which Baker drives is a "Covered Wagon", a new model which has been added to the 1941 line of Crosley cars. A utility car which can be used as a passenger car, station wagon as well as small truck, it is patterned after the old covered wagon, early transportation vehicle of pioneer Americans.
