      Dave, mine were never
      rusted but they were
      separated at the seams,
      so I'd wondered about
      that, too. It's a
      strange piece of
      engineering - if you
      weld/braze it, it won't
      fit right and you could
      warp the lower front
      fender.

      What I did - and I'm
      sure there are better
      ways, but this worked
      for me - was to close
      apply black silicone
      caulking from the top
      (after first taping it
      from beneath to prevent
      dripping) and then
      finger-smoothing the
      bead. The rubber mat
      will then cover that
      seam.

      Yes, it is kind of odd, because you d think that if the gasket was installed, then the joint was welded together, the gasket would catch fire or roast... Dave.
