      It was to be called the Marathon Six, Bob. Powel, always the car nut, scraped together $10,000 in 1906 and found a factory in Connersville, Indiana (later of Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg fame), and put together the Marathon Automobile Manufacturing Company (some sources say it was the Marathon Six Automobile Manufacturing Company) to build and sell an inexpensive $1,700 car powered by a then-considered-prestigious six-cylinder engine.

      The concept was to be a lot like his eventual Crosley radios and cars ... affordable products for the masses.

      Production was to commence the following year, but the Panic of 1907 killed off any hopes for that project.

      It's interesting to think what might have transpired had that recession not happened.
