      This block is the 4; cyl. stamped sheet metal block that was copper brazed together at the factory.; Made in the late 40's or early 50's.; This block was very greasy so I cleaned it in the parts washer.; Some green paint is left on the block but you can see the joints that were brazed together.; Bare block is standard bore 2 1/2 inches and ; has about .004 wear pattern in the cylinders that would easily clean up at .010 over size bore.; It has two valve guides missing.; Block weighs 12 - 13 pounds.; Sold as is.; Very nice for as old as it is.

      The factory would exchange the motor for $50....The CoBra was rushed through R&R inorder to help win the war. It was a unique idea which proved steel + water

        war. It was a unique idea which proved steel + water
        aren't going to last long together and water will win.
        I have a good friend who says he will GIVE me all the
        CoBra engines I want...and he is serious. Crosley
        even tried a venture with Alcoa for an aluminum
        block....so porous it too never held water...so to
        speak. So in partial answer to your question none but
        the die hard would want a CoBra and he either will
        plan on not running the motor or having it run only briefly.

Ya know, tin may have been slightly more forgivably in those Maine winters what with that purple antifreeze that stunk to high heaven with a leaky heater. Was it called Zerex? I cringe to think of the serviceability of them in my present home in south Georgia. I am familiar with the great service the "tin block" (sounds like an oxymoron) provided to out armed forces in the 40 and 50's. The power to weight ratio was absolutely unbeatable, save for some turbine engines,and they came too late to do much good for WWII........peter .

            hi Pete one of the problems the tin block had was dealing with the salt based anti freeze that was popular at the time .I have the orig.block from my dads wag that was changed over around 10.000 miles with no problems so kept as a spare and one that has small plates brazed on the water jacket fix holes.probably a common problem/solution.this is not a problem with today's coolants. I'd love to put mine back together some day but drivability is more important to me and its low on my list.the cast block runs fine. there are many people that strive for absolute authenticity in a restoration,and that works for them and they should have pride in saving an example for us to refer to as what's original.I have also been told that the tin is a hard block to rebore as the steel used galls instead of cutting cleanly so rebuilding one may be more trouble then they are worth but I have no experience to back that up so to be on the safe side I'll just hone and put a new set of rings and hope for the best if I ever get to it Gary Foster

              all most every thing was done at top speed to be used for the war effort.but keep in mind that for its original intended use as a power sores for a generator that would be serviced by the military and only run at high rpm,so very light, it hit its target dead on!.bringing it to use for a car motor came with more things to deal with,Americans were not used to a small displacement motor that you had to rev up to get use of its power.people were driving fords and Buick's that could idea along threw the gears rarely getting revved up so they were driven not hard enough and they overheated and damaged blocks also Gary Foster
