    Hey Pete: Ok, thanks a ton for your help. I, too have done a lifetime of car repair (that s my trade) but I didn t want to goof up my beautifull little truck.

       I guessed, from the torque required to satisfy my halfassed judgment, and set it on the light side at 125 foot pounds. Partly because the pinion shaft has some influence from the gear hardening process, and likely has been subjected to typical Crosley abuse. I'd not like to snap off a weakened pinion.  (see rear end notes about this subject) No loctite, but staked the nut.   I adjusted the pinion shims so that just a bit of bearing preload when the pinion is turned by fingers, with the ring gear removed and the nut fully torqued. It has worked well for me, but this ain't the bible. 
      Remember, you'll need to backtrack many times to get the gear pattern right and carrier bearing side clearance proper also. And, one of the things you'll need to consider is the shims you will likely be using are dinged up some and need additional crush to start with.   Kinda like pickin out a girl at the square dance. (I ask the drummer)
       This ain't no six pack job, and, by no means, what I've said provides adequate information to build a good rear.
        I have in excess of a half a dozen torque wrenches of various types, I've that have adopted over the years. I NEVER tighten a fastener of major importance with out a torque wrench, IF, I can acquire the specs. No good mechanic would. But, I have become accustomed to given ratings for different applications, and use them if dumb struck. This will happen when one must work on many of the rare (strange) foreign cars in the world. Absolutely no information was available for some of those I have rebuilt.

      Thanks for taking the time to help me out. You have not offended my knowledge of gear setup. I understand how things go. So, when you say "tighten the snot" out of the pinion nut, that means you really pull it tight!  Do you use a torque wrench? If so, how many foot-pounds of torque? Do you use Loctite? For obvious reasons, I surely don't want to do this job more than once.

      You can get NOS trans parts from Service Motors 574-664-3313 or 866-449-0029.

        I have a 1947 Crosley factory shop manual. It has all the engine torque specs, but nothing for the rear end. I tighten the snot out of mine when rebuilt it, but you need to understand the spacing of the pinion bearings. I don't mean to underestimate your knowledge, and if I did I apologize. This is critical and can lead to failure soon on. If you do not have any training or experience setting the bearing clearances, pinion/ring gear lash, and gear pattern settings, you would be very lucky to have any success at all.

      1.) I'm rebuilding my transmission. The only part I need is an "NOS" 2nd to 3rd slider gear. Does anyone know where I can get one?

      2.) Does anyone know the proper factory torque spec on my pinion nut for the differential? My manual does not have this listed.
