      ==========================
      One of young Crosley's
      freelance advertising
      clients was Ira J.
      Cooper. Cooper operated a
      chain of wholesale auto
      accessory stores, in
      addition to having an
      interest in a tire
      retreading operation in
      Dayton, Ohio.
      Cooper had decided to
      expand into mail-oder
      with a gasoline fortifier
      called Gaso-Tonic.
      More than a year of
      advertising had done
      little to stimulate
      sales, but Cooper had
      faith in the product, so
      he hired Powel Crosley,
      Jr. to develop a
      marketing plan.
      Crosley devised a plan
      that more than doubled
      Gaso-Tonic sales.
      Cooper was so pleased
      with this that he gave
      Crosley another challenge.

      Next: Powel gets into the
      tire business.
