PARENTS PETITION FOR CREATIONISM - Minnesota

Chetek (AP)- School district officials plan to discuss
teaching both creationism and evolution in a science
class after a student told her pastor her beliefs
      about creation weren't being heard.

A group of parents also filed a petition in may
asking the district to teach both theories in the
      10th-grade science course.

Creationists hold the belief God gave life to all
creatures. The evolution theory states all life
      evolved from simpler life.

Superintendent al Brown said the petition technically
      is a complaint.

He Plans to form a committee later this summer to
discuss teaching creationism and review the curriculum
      in the science class.

Greg Doyle, a spokesman for the state Department of
Public Instruction, said the district can teach
anything additional as long as state-mandated
      curriculums are met.

However, teaching only one religion as part of
creationism might blur the line between church and
      state, Doyle said.
