  • As a cyclist and a motorcyclist, I have to say I would appreciate a law that says that after 3 tickets for talking on a phone, you lose your license. When cycling in Costa Rica in our neck of the jungle, I find most Ticos pull off when talking, or slow WAY down. When cycling near tourist areas, I am always on alert, because so far, I have nearly been ran over each time I was there...

  • Honest folks, add up the salary for the year, divide by 12 - and that is actually what the labor law says. If you don't believe it - go to the website that was given and put in something like 100000 for every month, and you will see what you pay, is 100000 for the Christmas Bonus. • The simplest way is add up all you have paid, and divide by 12. No, you can't use estimates, averages, etc. In this way, how many months, days, etc they work means nothing - just give them 1/12th of what they earned during the period between 12/15 to 12/15 We have had literally over 200 workers over the years - a percentage (very small actually) wanted to take us to the Ministero...

  • Yeah, the hormigas balas are nasty. Thankfully I haven't had the joy of being bitten by one yet. Regarding fire ants - the best cure I have found is 1 gallon of boiling water poured straight into the nest. The nest doesn't seem to recover from cooking the queen and the eggs. All the poisons didn't seem to do much - except kill workers, which were easily replaced. At one time, I...

  • Okay, being someone who spends a lot of time in the field (we own about 900 acres of plantations of wood) I can say that for everyone around us, and we have had more than 100 workers at one time, the reason for the rubber boots is they are a lot cheaper than leather boots, last longer, and of course, because of the mud which in our area is 9 months out of the year. I have never had...

  • Well, they say the life in the campo is simpler... With our roads of lastre, we have no lack of rocks for sure. Speaking of which, I recently had an occasion to talk to some officials in town, and according to them, the road between Guatuso and Arenal has been paved twice. Funny, sure looks like lastre to me. • One thing that most dogs who end up in the street have learned here is to be wary regarding a person who has a stone in their hand. As soon as I see a dog coming out to act "bravo", I immediate stoop down and pick up and handful of stones - and they immediately run back to their house! Rarely have I had to throw a stone.
