      that isn't really true.  once the plant produces a pineapple it begins its dying process and never produces another pineapple.  it will shoot out new plants called pups (hijos in spanish) as mentioned by paul.  so actually the plant doesn't produce another pineapple but its offspring will.  this is the typical process of bromeliads.
