ON THE DEATH OF A BELOVED FRIEND
There are those who, being callous chauvinists, will retort to the news of the death of a beloved friend who happened to not be of our species, with It`s only a dog, or some such thing. Let us then examine the chauvinist under the microscope of philosophy.
If the chauvinist honestly holds to an anthropocentric, chauvinist religious doctrine, such as that of the orthodox Christians or Muslims, who say that only humans possess souls, and that humans alone are fashioned in the image of their god, and that the rest of creation is inferior, therefore, to humanity (which alone is godly), then so be it.
If, however, the chauvinist does not openly hold to such a religious doctrine, then he or she is blatantly a hypocrite, or else blatantly stupid, and shows no consistency in his or her approach to the natural world.
For if, like us, he or she claims not to believe in spiritual entities, such as soul, but claims to be a materialist, then the chauvinist betrays rampant inconsistency in regarding a dog or a horse as less in the scheme of things than a human.
To Nature it is the same whether the source of fertility in a patch of soil springs from a decaying human corpse, another animal corpse, or a pile of dumped fruit.
So let the chauvinist, who would express horror at us telling him to renounce all funeral rites for a dead relative, be consistent by dumping his relative on a dust-heap and exclaiming, It`s only a human, as he or she does for a dog.
And let the chauvinist, if he or she cannot do this, allow us at least to extend equal respect as he or she does to a human relative, to our beloved friend, who is more to us than all the human chauvinists in the world combined!
