The scientist who first raised the alarm about global warming says
the planet will be irrevocably damaged within a decade if greenhouse
gases continue to be produced at current levels.

At a meeting in San Francisco, Dr James Hanson (Hansen?) said one
more degree of warming would take the earth into climate patterns it
has not experienced in half a million years.

Meanwhile, at a United Nations climate change conference in Canada,
the US delegation is opposing an initiative by Canada to start formal
discussions on dealing with the issue.

Canada wants to find a formula that will include dissenting countries
and developing states not covered by the Kyoto protocol.

The US, which is not a signatory to Kyoto, has blocked moves towards
      limits on carbon emissions.
