Experts are warning that Government plans to expand major UK airports
are a recipe for environmental disaster.
A new report by researchers at the University of York says airlines
should have to pay full fuel tax.
It also recommends an environmental charge to counter the pollution
caused by aircraft exhaust fumes.
The university's Stockholm Institute, which is publishing the
document, says the Government urgently needs to help cut harmful
The authors of the report, Professor John Whitelegg and Howard
Cambridge, warn that polluting gases produced by aircraft exhaust
fumes are rising.
Prof Whitelegg said the growth in demand for flying was now one of
the most serious environmental threats the world faced.
He said: "This growth has been fuelled by generous tax breaks and
state aid and is contrary to the objectives of environmental policy,
especially efforts to prevent the worst consequences of climate
