Confederate dedication ceremony
- Here's a short description of a dedication ceremony for Melba Bair's great-grandfather.
"Leon contacted the Veterans Assoc. and they made a headstone and shipped it for free.
The Sons of the Confederacy contacted Leon then about holding a ceremony to honor our g-
grandfather. Is this not cool? Well Saturday he was honored with a graveside ceremony that
was awsome, it was perfect. The ceremony for Barney Maxey was pretty awesome. When they
played "Dixie" and "Taps" it was a little emotional. Everything was beautifully done. There
were 5 men and 2 young boys that were dressed in the Civil War uniforms, each one wore a
different type outfit and 2 ladies that were dressed in all widow black Civil War attire. The
memorial service was performed by the Confederate leader and Leon Maxey. The headstone
was draped with a Confederate Flag along with other flags posted around. He received the
gun salute and the firing of the cannon. They placed a large standing spray of red and white
carnations at the head of the grave, and the widow ladies along with a soldier laid a red rose
on his grave. After the ritual of the folding of the flag my sister Margie was presented with
the Confederate Flag from Barney's headstone for being the oldest attending descendant at
