You've heard of the expression, "old wine in new bottles." The
Barbershop Pioneers Conventions are something like that. They
preserve the old style of harmonizing, the old camaraderie &
informality, & the old judging system, but these conventions have been
held for only 25 years, & the organization that promotes them, the
Barbershop Quartet Preservation Association (BQPA, now a subsidiary
of the Barbershop Harmony Society), is only a couple of years old.
These conventions are a far cry from the Society's International &
Midwinter Conventions, though they're as firmly rooted in barbershop
tradition as the big gatherings.
The Midwest Barbershop Pioneers Convention will occur Sept. 7-10 at
Midway Motor Hotel,1600 East Oakton Street, Elk Grove Village, IL (a
suburb northwest of Chicago). The dates are always the Thursday
through Saturday following Labor Day. Admission/registration is
free, but if you plan to stay overnight, you'll want to reserve your
hotel room at our special rate of $69/night.
Most importantly, the Pioneers Convention is probably the only major
barbershop convention that will be held in the Chicago area during
the foreseeable future.
Find out more at http://www.bqpa.com/events.html
-- I plan to be
there (tho' I'll be busy vocalizing & dancing with New Tradition at
their pre-contest retreat all day Saturday).
Hope you can make the convention!
