Happy New Year!
As one of the on-going ministries of Chi Rho Press, here
is a meditation from 'The Road to Emmaus,' a book of
daily meditations written by and for the LGBT community
of faith. This meditation was written by R. Adam DeBaugh.
Please feel free to forward this to your friends.
Back in Cana, Jesus was met by an official who had come
the twenty-five miles or so from his home in Capernaum to
beg Jesus to come there and heal his son.
Jesus had begun to tire of people who clamored for more
miracles. He knew that some of them were not there out
of faith but out of curiosity. They didnt look at Jesus
as a spiritual leader but rather as a carnival-side-show
attraction who performed amusing tricks. Testing the
officials faith, Jesus rebuffed him, saying, Unless
you see signs and wonders you will not believe. But
the official was not dismayed at the rebuke; he merely
stated his hope and his belief. His little boy was dying
and he didnt care about any signs and wonders. All he
wanted was help, before it was too late.
Touched and reassured by the officials faith, Jesus said,
Go; your son will live. Sure in his faith, the official
did not question Jesus reply. He did not continue to
importune Jesus to come to Capernaum; he did not ask how
the healing could possibly happen; he simply believed the
word that Jesus spoke to him and went his way. In the
end, his faith was rewarded; the boy had been healed at
exactly the time that Jesus had said the words.
Is my faith that strong? Can I deny the desire for a good
show from Jesus? Can I take the word of the Savior that,
even at long distance, my needs will be met? Do I trust
that the many promises Jesus has made to me will come to
Great Physician, give me the faith to believe your healing
promises. Help me to go on my way trusting in your promise
of life. Amen.
Grace and peace,
R. Adam DeBaugh and Kevin Stone Fries
