Chi Rho Reflection for the Week of October 20, 2013

      **********
Please check out two new things on our Web site: Our new line of note cards, http://www.chirhopress.com/products/Fontaine_cards_pick_list.html and our newest book, "A More Excellent Way," by EXCEL Retreat Ministries, at http://www.chirhopress.com/products/product_details/BookRevAMoreExcellent%20Way.htm .

      **********

As one of the on-going ministries of Chi Rho Press,
here is a selection from our book of daily devotions,
"Living as the Beloved: One Day at a Time," by the
      Rev. Dr. Sandra Bochonok.

Please read the Scripture passage and Dr. Bochonok's
meditation. We hope you will be blessed. Thank you
for forwarding this to your friends.

      The guarded tomb

"The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the
chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate
and said, 'Sir, we remember what that impostor said
while he was still alive, "After three days I will rise
again." Therefore command that the tomb be made
secure until the third day; otherwise his disciples may
go and steal him away, and tell the people, "He has
been raised from the dead", and the last deception
would be worse than the first.' Pilate said to them,
'You have a guard of soldiers; go, make it as secure
as you can.' So they went with the guard and made
the tomb secure by sealing the stone."
      Matthew 27:62-66

I wonder what Pilate was actually thinking. Did he
regret his previous weakness when he allowed these
hostile religious leaders to influence his decision?
These fanatic leaders were determined to eliminate
Jesus in death as well as in life. Was Pilate weary
of these religious leaders who refused to be pacified?
Perhaps it was just easier to cave in to their demands
yet again and secure the tomb as they wished with an
armed guard. This probably seemed a small thing
after such a horrific act of condemning an innocent
man to death. Pilate now had to live with the consequences of his actions.

What is truth? Pilate's earlier musings are ours. Who
is the deceiver and who the deceived? What deceives
us today under the guise of religious purity and zealotry?
The insistent religious leaders went and made the tomb
as secure as they knew how. They sealed the tomb and
posted an armed Roman guard. They did their best to
      hold Jesus in the grave.

Where am I in today's story, God? Has religious zealotry
blinded me to the spirit of Christ? Or have I been Pilate, condoning religious violence because it was too difficult
      to stand for justice? Amen.

      Grace and peace,
