Chi Rho Reflection for the Week of Oct. 14, 2001
- As one of the on-going ministries of Chi Rho Press, here
is a meditation from 'The Road to Emmaus,' a book of
daily meditations written by and for the LGBT community
of faith. This meditation was written by Andy T. Sidden.
Please feel free to forward this to your friends.
Please read Matthew 9:35-10:4
God doesnt call extraordinary people to do ordinary works,
but ordinary people to do extraordinary ones.
A student pastor had prayed for someone who could take
snapshots for the church scrapbook and was thrilled when
a newcomer to the congregation said she was a shutterbug.
Kathy balked, though, when he offered her the assignment.
Im not a professional, she said. I had hoped to work
with someone who was, someone who could help me improve.
The student pastor thought for a minute. He had no one
Kathy, you have a camera and youre willing, he said.
Youre the closest thing to a professional that we have.
Ask God to help you improve. God will make you into a
Ever so slowly, a smile crept across Kathys face. Okay,
she said. Ill do it. Still smiling, Kathy started to
walk away, then turned back to the student pastor.
Me, a professional? Imagine that, she said.
The pastor-to-be nodded. Imagine that.
God calls each of us, just as the disciples were called.
And just as the disciples were ordinary people with
ordinary skills and ordinary shortcomings, so are we.
The student pastor knew that well from the recent calling
in his own life.
He also knew that through Christs life we are given a
wonderful job description of what our tasks will be. All
we have to do is be willing. God will supply everything
else that is needed to make us pros.
Dear Savior, give us the wisdom to follow the course that
you have set for our lives and our ministry. Be with us as
we follow your call for us. Amen.
Grace and peace,
R. Adam DeBaugh and Kevin Stone Fries
