Chi Rho Reflection for the Week of April 17, 2005
As one of the on-going ministries of Chi Rho
Press, here is a selection from our new book
of daily devotions, "Living as the Beloved:
One Day at a Time," by the Rev. Dr. Sandra
Please read the Scripture passage and Dr. Bochonok's
meditation. We hope you will be blessed.
Thank you for forwarding this to your friends.
"Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up on the mountain, and
when he sat down his disciples came to him. And he
opened his mouth and taught them".
The Sermon on the Mount, as described by Matthew, is
one of Jesus' most famous teachings. People from many
different faith backgrounds have found it transforming
and life-changing. I know of a Unitarian minister who
loves to read it from time to time. Although she is
not Christian, she marvels at the Sermon on the Mount's
amazing power and on occasion will teach and preach it
to her religiously diverse congregation.
The first twelve verses in this marvelous chapter are
known more commonly as the Beatitudes. The actual
Greek root word translates as "blessed, fortunate,
and happy." The Beatitudes are literally blessed
attitudes that energize, empower, equip, and encourage
us in day-to-day living. Through them, we can also
rest and retreat, relax and revitalize, refocus and
renew our spiritual lives. The Beatitudes help us
experience stepping stones and not stumbling blocks
to God. They help us experience divine breakthroughs
and not breakdowns. So all this is to say, if you
would like to be happy and live a better life, then
these concise teachings of Jesus are as good as it
gets. The Beatitudes help us live as God's beloved,
one day at time.
We carry our attitudes with us everywhere we go.
Attitudes affect how we perceive and interact with life.
Perception is everything. Our attitudes can bring us
peace, joy, comfort, courage, and endurance. Or they
can destroy our sense of well being with unease,
depression, fear, and the inability to commit to
anything or anyone. Our attitudes can even change
the world. And we ourselves are changed and the world
becomes a better place. Blessed attitudes help us
experience a little bit of heaven on earth.
So come and be blessed through the Beatitudes. Consider
meditating on one per day. Do a little journal writing.
Ask yourself how each Beatitude can help and improve
your life. Then ask God for strength for the day as
you let these lovely words become part of your prayer
life. You will be glad you did.
God, give me these energizing, empowering, equipping,
and encouraging attitudes for life. Amen.
Grace and peace,
