I talked to Josh at the REI Austin Gateway and he said they have no charge there for any group.  He also said they'd be happy to organize a clinic if we were ever interested in any particular topic - apparently they did geocaching clinics in the past.  I'm also posting a link to their upcoming events.  There is a two part GPS class coming up  - second part will be more hands on with receivers and Q&A - they say GPS users of any level would benefit.  Others are on map reading (tonight), family camping (tonight, see below) and various outdoorsy topics (bike maintenance.  You can join their coop for $20 which gets you 10% money back on all retail purchases, ability to shop their garage sales (returned merchandise which may be used or just not suitable for people's needs), and a $5 off the texas state parks annual membership (55 instead of 60).  http://www.rei.com/stores/store_events.jsp?store=32

Intro to Family Camping - REI Round Rock

      12/2/2009 7:00 PM

Join us for this free clinic to learn about local destinations, special family camping necessities, and tips for keeping everyone happy! Family outings into the outdoors are a great way to have fun, learn new activities and enjoy quality time as a family. Do you remember camping as a kid? The excitement of exploring new territory? The feeling of being on top of the world after accomplishing your goal? When you're out camping, every rock, plant, or path seems to come alive with the possibility of adventure. Whether it's watching meteors from the back yard or launching off on a weekend jaunt, camping lets kids have a built-in sense of wonder and excitement when it comes to exploring the world around them. It can be contagious!

I attended the beginning and advanced GPS classes at REI Round Rock.  They also have a nice meeting area for free.  The first GPS class was pretty basic, with a classroom part and then we went to nearby McNeil Park and found some waypoints.  I was the only attendee of the advanced GPS class I attended, and most of the time was spent in the Garmin MapSource tool, going through all its different capabilities.  Useful to me since I have a Garmin GPSr.

REI will set up clinics for free.  I set up one with them for my son's Boy Scout troop where they taught us about backpacks and boots for backpacking.  It was very well done.
