Group Description

Celtic Well is a forum for the discussion of objective evidence for Celtic religious practices and beliefs. Central to this study are the myths and legends preserved during the medieval period, reports by Roman and Greek writers, and archaeological and art historical analysis of extant monuments and artefacts.

All discussion is moderated to ensure the elimination of offensive or partisan postings and to encourage serious research.

In Celtic lands during ancient times, wells, springs and waters in general have been considered a link with the Otherworld and the source of healing and poetic knowledge. Consequently, the well is the symbol for this list whose purpose is to discuss language, art, folk remains, literature, history, archaeology, geography, anthropology, and other topics that shed light on the religious beliefs and practices of Celtic peoples.

Celtic Well was set up in the late 1990's by Francine Nicholson as a forum for the study of Celtic religion, mythology and legend, and to separate authentic research from romantic and Neo-Pagan fiction.

When Francine died in February 2003, the group, with no moderator, went silent. The Yahoos deleted the group and four years of archives were lost. Using internet caches and personal archives, several group members saved most of the archives, and reformed the group in its current incarnation.

The original archives are currently being reformatted as text files and stored already in the group's Files folder, and the Celtic Well website is being updated and moved to a new location.

Celtic Well is now managed by Stiof MacAmhalghaidh and linked to the IRQUAS Irish Heritage Studies project and cross-fertilisation of discussions between relevant IRQUAS groups (e.g. early-medieval-ireland, iron-age-ireland) and Celtic Well are encouraged.
