Group Description

This group is for folks who raise silkmoths. A lot of us are actually interested in the silk, although there are also several who are primarily interested in the moths. Of particular interest are the various Saturniid, or Giant Silkmoths, such as the Tussah moth, Polyphemus moth, Cecropia, and Eri moths. Many of us also rear Bombyx mori, the China silk moth, the common silkworm that is used not only for sericulture but also for laboratory and classroom projects worldwide. The group is mostly focused on raising the cats (caterpillars) but discussions of other aspects of sericulture, such as degumming, spinning, weaving, etc., are considered entirely within our topic.
NOTE: The United States Department of Agriculture requires permits for importation and interstate shipment of insects within the US. Please check the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) page here: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant_health/

******* BREAKING NEWS March 2010 - the USDA no longer regulates interstate transit of Bombyx mori within the contiguous US.********
